Salon People Feature | A close encounter with Chris Carter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Carter was introduced by Constance Penley, a professor and chairwoman of the University of California at Santa Barbara Film Studies Department, who has herself written extensively on science fiction.
Carter's appearance in Santa Barbara came just a day after he began work on the final episode of the show's seventh season, which he revealed will be called "Requiem." It could be the last "X-Files" show.
In the end, Carter left the impression that he doesn't take the fandom and his own place in it especially seriously, but that he does take his role as a popular storyteller with the deepest sense of personal gravity and responsibility.

That means Carter might have a lot of loose ends to tie up by next May. As of early October, a full quarter of the season already mapped out, with a number of scripts ready for the cameras.
But though Carter says he knows exactly what the series' final episode will be like--"I've had that in my head for years," he reveals--it's unclear if it will come at the end of the seventh season or at the end of a possible eighth season.
Carter insists that he has no plans to run off and abandon the franchise he created in favor of the big screen--or surfing.

Though Carter's material and approach may not be entirely original (as fans of Kolchak can certainly attest), his acute skill for tapping into the prevailing millennial paranoia of his generation is as patently undeniable as the public's endless fascination with the mysterious otherworldly forces on which he has built an empire.
The son of a blue-collar worker, Carter was raised in the working-class suburbs of California.
Encouraged by his newfound muse to pursue a career in screenwriting, the ambitious and amiable young writer quickly landed a lucrative, entry-level writing position at Disney while simultaneously gaining a reputation as an arbitrator of cool among the Mouse House elite.

It is clear from the script (written by series creator Chris Carter) that Mulder is supposed to be a very clever agent of the FBI, and certainly his continued (albeit limited) success at keeping his investigations going would lead one to believe that he should be fairly bright.
Carter would like us to believe that Mulder is intelligent, but apparently Carter has no idea how to write Mulder that way.
The plot is as intricately structured and unpredictable as the conspiracy itself, and while there is a greater emphasis on action and spectacle here, those sequences are integral to the story and free of gratuitous violent shocks.
