 'This Old Cat': a monster Redhill report
Graham Broad, drums; Dave Bronze, bass; Gary Brooker, voice; Chris Copping, Korg synth;
Graham Broad, drums; Dave Bronze, bass; Gary Brooker, piano; Chris Copping, Hammond;
Now Graham Broad's crisp snare rolls, and the witty triple-keyboard quotations from the Circus March, suggested that vaudeville was a vital ingredient in the Procol melting-pot as well, as the curtains opened on the most colourful corner of Keith Reid's inner world.

 Procol Harum
In addition, bassist Dave Knights took off, so the band decided to kill two birds with one stone, and picked up one Chris Copping (who was actually a member back when the band was known as The Paramounts) to fill both the organ and bass duties.
The important thing to note, though, is that (at least here), Copping is a bassist first and an organist second, and that means that the unique setup of the original Procol evolved, in essence, into a "standard" rock setup (ie guitar drums bass keyboard).
This wasn't as disastrous as would have been, say, the departure of Brooker or Reid, but it still had a significant impact on the band, as Fisher's organ was one of the main pillars on which laid the unique sound of the band.

 Amazon.com: Broken Barricades [IMPORT]: Music
The performances by Brooker, Trower, Wilson, and bassist Chris Copping are excellent, and the songs are consistently solid from beginning to end.
Though certainly not a full-tilt rocker, the album did manage to display a plethora of musical stylings to which fans were not necessarily accustomed, hence it's a "must listen" for those who are just now exploring the group's marvelous oeuvre.
Other great rockers include guitarist Robin Trower's "Memorial Drive," "Power Failure" (featuring an awesome drum solo by B.J. Wilson), the great rollicking fun of "Playmate Of The Mouth" (one of my personal favorite Harum tunes), and Trower's album finale, "Poor Mohammed." The classical-flavored title song is very lovely.

Important guests: Tim Renwick (guitar), Micky Moody (guitar), Jimmy Jewell (sax), Colin Gibson (bass), Glen LeFleur (percussion), Henry Spinetti (drums), and many members from Procol Harum (his manager was a former member of the band): Gary Brooker (keyboards), Chris Copping (bass), Pete Solley (keyboards), Robin Trower (guitar), and B.J. Wilson (drums).
Colin probably plays here because Kenny Craddock is the producer in some tracks.
First thing: Colin Gibson doesn't play here, but I include it because there are 3 songs co-written by Colin.

 PROCOL HARUM
The roots of Procol Harum, one of leading exponents of the art rock school, lie in the Paramounts, a London band that recorded five singles between October 1963 and September 1965 and included singer/pianist Gary Brooker, guitarist Robin Trower, bassist/organist Chris Copping, and drummer B.J. Wilson.
Procol’s revamped lineup—featuring Brooker, Trower, Wilson, organist Matthew Fisher, and bassist David Knights—produced three critically acclaimed albums: Procol Harum (Deram 18008; 1967), Shine On Brightly (AandM 4151; 1968), A Salty Dog (AandM 4179; 1969).
Procol’s first single, "A Whiter Shade of Pale" (Deram 7507; 1967)—based on the melody from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite No. 3 in D major— became an international smash, selling more than four million copies overall.

 NME 1973, part IV
That distinctive Procol grandioso came through on Fires (Which Burn Brightly) as Chris Copping, master of the full-sounding organ, backed up Brooker's honky piano.
On the title track he employs 12 violins, six 'celli, two trumpets, two trombones and two French horns, and has little difficulty making them sound like an enormous orchestra.
The band's favourites like Salty Dog, Devil Came From Kansas and Grand Hotel were played stronger than ever.

 Hammond B3 & C3
The Hammond played by Chris Copping in the Beat Workshop video is just as large: it may be an A series.
The B3 weighs 425 pounds and the C is even heavier as it has a more extensive wooden frame which surrounds the bass of the organ.
