Chris Hani, the charismatic former leader of the Communist Party, was shot dead by a Polish immigrant in what was always assumed to be a Right-wing conspiracy to undermine the transition from apartheid.
But the ANC leadership has been thrown into disarray by the publication of military intelligence reports which have revived a rumour that ANC military officials and intelligence officers of the former white government were implicated in the killing.
The reports suggest that some ANC officials knew in advance of the plot but did nothing about it as they regarded Mr Hani's popularity among the grassroots as a threat to their position.
