ChrisHarman: The prophet and the proletariat (1994)
ChrisHarman charts a careful course through the contradictions of ISlamism, revealing its class roots and arguing that when the Islamists are in opposition the socialist attitude should be 'with the state never, with the Islamists sometimes'.
Harman is parodied in Tariq Ali's 1990novel Redemption which contains a character named "Nutty Shardman" who menaces others on the left with whom he has theoretical disagreements.
Harman's work on 1968, The Fire Last Time was recommended by rock band Rage Against the Machine in their album sleeve notes for Evil Empire.
Harman stresses the idea that this policy package is the result of a historical process.
Harman refers to the American case where economic growth meant 25 years of falling real wages and longer working hours for US labour, which is 400 hours a year more than in France and Germany only to reach the same profit levels as in 1973.
According to Harman, "it is incredible to see people like Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel prize winner who was the vice- president of the World Bank, opposed to all that the IMF is saying.
Chris Paul Harman was born in 1970 in Toronto, where he studied classical guitar, cello, and electronic music with Barton Wigg, Alan Stellings, and Wes Wraggett respectively.
In 1986, Chris Paul Harman was a finalist in the CBC Radio National Competition for Young Composers, and was the Grand Prize winner at that same competition in 1990.
Harman's work Uta received an honourable mention at the Gaudeamus International Music Week, and his work Amerika was awarded the Jules Leger Prize for new chamber music in Canada, and was shortlisted for the Prix de Composition de la Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco.
Harman's history lesson simply confirmed Kropotkin's argument that "in proportion as the socialists become a power in the present bourgeois society and State, their socialism must die out." Just as the experience of Social Democracy confirmed it.
Anarchists are well aware of the importance of (in Harman's words) carrying "political argument into the organised working class" (and disorganised, of course).
Harman is hardly saying anything which anarchists had not been arguing for over a hundred years.
Needless to say, this sort of rigid stagism is a hallmark of the British Communist historians group that provided the ideological framework for the Brenner thesis.
Harman quite rightly referred to the Brenner thesis debate as the second stage of one that began with the Paul Sweezy-Maurice Dobb debate of the 1950s.
Like Brenner, Dobb argued that capitalism was a unique event that occurred in the British countryside and that (implicitly) diffused throughout the world.

ChrisHarman does this from a traditional socialist point of view, but without any hint of rote Marxism.
He lays bare both the strengths and the flaws of the movement, showing where the various groups and alliances within it are right and wrong in their views, quoting liberally where needed.
According to Harman, there should of course be space for a thousand flowers blooming, but that at some point these ideas need to be evaluated; there needs to be a direction to the movement will it succeed.
People that follow internal developments in the Socialist Workers' Party rather more closely than I do sometimes argue that ChrisHarman is the keeper of the orthodox Cliffite flame against the depredations of the Rees-German revisionist clique.
No political differences at the higher levels of that organisation are ever revealed to the ordinary membership, let alone the wider left.
But if there is anything in the theory, then Harman's contribution to this week's Socialist Worker - written in the context of the impending launch of the Sheridan party on Sunday - makes interesting reading:
ChrisHarman '08 scored a career-high five goals and Tim Chryssikos '05 added four goals and three assists to pace the Garnet (3-3) to a 12-10 non-conference victory at Drew (2-3).
Harman then picked up his second goal at 8:42 off a Chryssikos feed.
Harman collected his third goal at 11:03 to tie the contest at 4-4.

The two main speakers spoke for 21 minutes each, and there were then some 22 contributions from the floor - one of the highest degrees of participation at any meeting at the forum.
Note from ChrisHarman In transcribing the debate, I could not decipher from the recording of most of the names of contributors from the floor, and four of the contributions at all.
The transcriptions of some of the other contributions are based on translations provided verbally at the meeting.
Further to Chris H-H's series on objections to the Gospel as issues to be dealt with in evangelising I offered a topic on the history of the church as an objection to the Gospel.
Chris Hamer-Hodges is running what promises to be an interesting series of posts on questions and objections which challenge the truth and validity of the Gospel of Jesus.
Triggered by Mark Hadfield, he opened with an invitation to add to the inventory of questions and objections to be covered.
He will be trained by Newport's Tony Borg and promoted by Chris Sanigar, as will Steffan Hughes and Robbie James, who holds the Welsh senior welter belt.
Welter Jamie Way, light heavyweight Wayne Brooks and heavyweight ChrisHarman have also gone professional.
Cardiff's Brooks and Harman - both reigning Welsh ABA champions - have joined promoter Paul Boyce's stable.

Some of them have been published by Monthly Review.
If Harman and his co-thinkers ever bothered to consult these texts, they'd realize how silly it is to speak of workers and peasants failing to take "things into their own hands".
