knox then set about forming the utterly eclectic and thoroughly low-tech tall dwarfs with his fellow former toy love buddy, guitarist alec bathgate - the whimsy to his destructionary element and a high quality song-writer in his own right.
'not given lightly' could be called the apex of knox's career - his most commercial success and his most oft referred and covered 'classic' song, it's also well-documented as his very first love song (and some would point out that his wife barbara had certainly deserved one by the time of its release..).

 TrouserPress.com :: Chris Knox
Chris Knox is the godfather of the New Zealand alternative-music scene — if Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, Robyn Hitchcock and Lou Reed were all the same person, that's how important he is to Kiwi pop.
Knox sings in Tall Dwarfs most of the time, but the group is a full-fledged collaboration with Bathgate; their records are very different from Knox's solo records, with ultra-weird arrangements (often dominated by their signature loops of deeply unconventional percussion) and subtler, trickier songs.
Knox's unique weirdness is back ("Lament of the Gastropod," "Chemicals Are Our Friends"), his social-conscience lyrics are on the mark and rarely heavy-handed, his words have never been cleverer (check out the frenetic babble of "A Song to Welcome the Onset of Maturity"), his gift for simple, flawless melodies has never gone away.

Chris turns his extremely able (if slightly unhinged) mind to film, video, comix, writing and criticism in a variety of regular outlets, including his country's leading magazines and national television networks.
Chris, aided in recent years by his partner Barbara Ward, has been making videoclips to accompany Dwarfs' records since day one as well as for his solo stuff and the odd other band-including a decidedly low-tech vid for Flying Nun's first single, Tally Ho by The Clean.

You may remember Chris Knox from his old band, the Tall Dwarfs, as they were spawned from the same New Zealand indie label, Flying Nun, as the Verlaines, the Chills, and the Clean.
Knox, however, is no longer notorious for onstage self-laceration (he used to carve himself up with whatever jagged objects happened to be lying around); at 47, he rarely puts himself under the knife anymore.
The subject matter Knox tackles is, on the surface, what you might expect of a mad genius pushing 50: twisted love songs, ruminations on aging, human nature, mortality.
