Lemmon's film debut was a bit part in the 1949 film The Lady Takes a Sailor but he was not noticed until his official debut opposite Judy Holliday in It Should Happen to You (1954).
Lemmon was the first actor to have won a Best Actor award and a Best Supporting Actor award.
After Matthau's death in 2000, Lemmon had joined other friends and relatives on a Larry King Live show in tribute to Matthau; a year later, many of the same people appeared on the show again, this time in tribute to Lemmon.

Lemmon admits to having had a serious drinking problem at one time, which is one reason he looks back on his Oscar-winning role as Harry Stoner in Save the Tiger (1973) (1973) as perhaps the most gratifying, emotionally fulfilling performance of his career.
Lemmon's dad, a bakery executive, didn't approve of his son taking up acting, but told him he should continue with it only as long as he felt passion for it, adding: "The day I don't find romance in a loaf of bread..." His dying words to Jack were: "Spread a little sunshine."
Lemmon received the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award in 1988, but, as a lifelong pianist (and a good one), one of his most satisfying achievements was contributing a song to his 1957 movie Fire Down Below.

Chris Lemmon had done a sitcom, "Duet," before this role on Knots, and had played so many goody-two-shoes characters before this that it was hard to peg his character as the psycho.
I'm not sure if that was a conscious acting decision by Lemmon or not; even in the "studio showdown" at the conclusion of the story, he didn't convey genuine malevolence like Danny Waleska could do at the drop of a hat.

Jack Lemmon's work was without a doubt the greatest single influence on me as a would-be actor.
Lemmon was one of the few actors out there whom you could instantly like, but you'd constantly be fascinated by the darker, almost paranoid side he gave to each of his characters.
And all we're left with Chris Lemmon...tragic indeed.
