  Chris Mars/Tenterhooks
Chris Mars co-founded the Replacements when he was seventeen-years-old, and spent the next ten years pounding his drumset behind a band which produced some of the most influential sounds of the l980's.
Chris wrote music throughout his tenure with the Replacements, co-authoring some of the songs responsible with launching the band's reputation.
Mars says the best part of the deal was that he would never again have to worry about paying studio time or putting recordings on hold.

Anonymous Botch, Chris Mars' fourth solo album, at first glance appears to be an attempt at a more commercial recording, with the addition of acoustic guitars, violin, and cello, as well as a heavier reliance on keyboards, but it is ultimately hampered by his antisocial vocals and a distracting...
Mars often shows a warmth toward his fellow man, as on the fond farewell to departed friend and bandmate Bob Stinson ("Two Dreams"), yet he can also be completely unforgiving and callous, as he is throughout "Janet's New Kidney," a cheerless, nursery rhyme-like tale of abandonment of a reckless alcoholic.
Mars says goodbye and good luck with a nod toward the horn-filled '70s rock of his youth on "I'll Be Gone," which could be seen as an adieu to the music business itself.

After Tenterhooks, Mars would devote himself full-time to his painting which, inspired by his older brother's schizophrenia, focused on disturbing landscapes and even more disturbing figures and portraits.

Interview: Chris Mars | The A.V. Club
Minneapolis artist Chris Mars is living proof that F. Scott Fitzgerald was dead wrong when he said there are no second acts in American lives.
Though famous in the 1980s as the drummer for alt-rock heroes The Replacements, Mars eventually left the music world behind entirely to focus on the visual arts, now specializing in stunningly evocative, macabre portraits.
The A.V. Club spoke with him recently—mostly about art, but it was impossible to resist asking for Mars’ thoughts on a reunion of his old band—in conjunction with his participation in Juxtapoz Magazine’s annual group show of “lowbrow” art, taking place this year at Minneapolis galleries Ox-Op Arts and Soo Visual Arts Center.

Cruel and creepy, yet with a visceral beauty, Mars' storytelling on canvas is almost classical in its precision, and feels strangely at home amid the memento mori and Biblical topics featured in works from the institute's collection.
As witness to his older brother's sufferings from schizophrenia and the attempts at treating it, Mars allows the monsters who populated his brother's mind to roam freely in his paintings.

Originally, the band was called the Impediments, but they changed their name to the Replacements after being banned from a local club for disorderly behavior.
