		Chris McGregor was born in Somerset West, Western Cape, where his father, Murray McGregor was teaching at Hottentots’ Holland High School.
		In 1962 Chris took a group from Cape Town to the Castle Lager Jazz Festival at Moroka-Jabavu Stadium in Soweto, where the group came second in the small group section.
		With this band Chris was at last able to explore and put into practice the many ideas he had as a result of the many different experiences he had been exposed to.

		South African born and raised pianist/bandleader Chris McGregor formed the racially mixed Blue Notes in the early 1960's, touring and trying to get by in extremely difficult political circumstances as best they could.
		By 1964, facing continous government harassment, Chris and the Blue Notes fled their South African homeland, finally settling in London in 1966.
		Not too long afterwards, Chris formed The Brotherhood Of Breath, which was essentially the Blue Notes, augmented by a large number of the friends that they had made in the British jazz community.

		As was true of Cuneiform's earlier Travelling Somewhere, the recording quality is on a par with Sun Ra's Saturns of the same time, with the leader's piano suffering most—a shame, because even though McGregor was strictly a fundamental soloist, the Brotherhood derived much of their energy from his quirky comping and interjections.
		But McGregor's compositions and those of his sidemen are both intricate and jubilant, the solos—by the South Africans, Osborne, Beckett, and others—are high-stepping, and with the band's two LPs for RCA Neon difficult to find (the second was never even issued here), this will do just fine.
