A Private Members Bill, introduced by Chris Mole MP in December 2002 has passed all its Parliamentary hurdles and became law today when it received Royal Assent, according to a press release from the British Library.
The introduction of MP Chris Mole's Bill followed a campaign to bring the law up-to-date with the current world of publishing which was led by the British Library, on behalf of all the legal deposit libraries and in association with Government and the principal publisher trade bodies.
Chris Mole MP said, 'I am thrilled that we have managed to secure this historic change in Legal Deposit Law.

The late Christopher Hill, the distinguished Marxist historian who became master of Balliol College, Oxford, is alleged to have operated as a Soviet "agent of influence" during wartime service at the Foreign Office.
A fellow historian has revealed details of conversations and government papers which he says prove that Mr Hill - who died aged 91 on February 23 - was a Soviet "mole" who concealed his membership of the Communist party.
"His first question was, 'you are not going to expose me as a mole, are you?' It was not a threat but a plea." Mr Glees said he had given his word he would not "unmask" Mr Hill while he lived.

He accused Labour of failing patients and failing Ipswich, as the government announced plans to allow two mobile operating theatres to operate on a private basis within the NHS.
