There was confusion over Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige's status after the state assembly voted to accept an apparent letter of resignation, while the man himself denied having written it.
Ngige said that he had been arrested in his office by a local police commander and held there while the clerk of the state assembly arrived and asked him to confirm his resignation.
Nigeria's national police spokesman Chris Olakpe told AFP that the police had not arrested Ngige but were deployed for his protection, and that he remained the state governor.
