Where now for our movement?|17Oct04|Socialist Worker
Chris Nineham, a member of the ESF steering committee, and Dave Sherry, a delegate at the ESF from the TGWU union in Glasgow, spoke to Socialist Worker about the future for the movement.
Speaking on the eve of the assembly, Chris Nineham was keen that the London ESF, like previous forums, provided an impetus to the movements against capitalism and war.
Chris Nineham added that the movement would have another chance to confront the world’s rulers when the G8 meets at the Gleneagles golf course in Scotland in July 2005.

Chris Nineham’s article on the European Social Forum (ESF) in October’s Socialist Review lays down some important markers for the future of the movement.
As Chris Nineham and other SWP comrades have argued, this movement draws strength from its breadth and diversity.
While most climate change, anti-GM, or trade justice campaigners will happily join in anti-war mobilisations when the need is obvious to all, they won’t stay actively engaged with a movement that does not give adequate space or importance to their specific concerns.

Art, alienation and capitalism: a reply to Chris Nineham
Chris says--and I think it is intended critically--that for me 'art is fundamentally counterposed to capitalism'.
If by this Chris means that I think all or most art is consciously anti-capitalist or that art is bound to move in an anti-capitalist direction or that I underestimate the capacity of the bourgeoisie to co-opt art and use it for its purposes, then he is very wide of the mark.
Chris writes, 'It seems rash to suggest that artistic production is in a simple way immune from such powerful processes' and '...we are deluding ourselves if we believe that any aspect of our lives completely escapes the alienation imposed by capitalist relations'.

Chris Nineham, from the Stop the War Coalition, said that groups like OXFAM and Christian Aid, who work closely with the government, argued that the Make Poverty History efforts were not opposed to the G8, and therefore did not want the war on Iraq to enter into any of their activities.
Regardless, Nineham pointed out that the people who were mobilized by Make Poverty History were making the connections on their own.
Eventually, the movement was united as it became clear that there was a radical sentiment in the crowds.

Chris Nineham, here judiciously identified as ‘one of the march’s organisers’, is a ubiquitous, though rather dense, SWP functionary whose task is to make up the numbers of the caucus for whatever front organisation the party decides to set up next.
Acting on a scheme that I fear my readers may be unconvinced by, the SWP demonstrated the autonomous character of Globalise Resistance by taking only ten places on the steering committee of 24 while reassuringly labelling the rest ‘independent’.
There is no ‘cycle of violence’: there is an enemy with whom no compromise or negotiation is possible, and an overriding duty on our part to defeat it.
