Chris Paterson played at fly-half against England last month but Scotland coach Matt Williams believes that the player, for now, is more effective on the wing.
Despite insisting after his appointment that Paterson was his firm choice as fly-half, to the point of making sure he was moved there by his club coach Frank Hadden, Williams is now critical of the clamour for Paterson to play stand-off.
It is perhaps admirable for the national coach to try and shield his players from pressure, but, worryingly, Williams appears to be going down the same route as that taken by his predecessor McGeechan who misread the pressure on himself as pressure on a player who actually thrives on the stakes being high.
