Review: A Parrot in the Pepper Tree by Chris Stewart | Special Reports | Guardian Unlimited Books
Chris Stewart, the almost-bankrupt ex-drummer of Genesis, decided 20 years ago to up sticks and try his luck in a tumbledown shack in southern Spain, and discovered that there was.
What marks Stewart out from similar writers is that this is not the life of an Englishman remaining English abroad, as in the Provence of Peter Mayle, but that of an intrepid man having to survive in a primitive part of Spain where making a living is a struggle.
Stewart is at his strongest on the subject of nature and the environment.

Amazon.ca: Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia: Books: Chris Stewart   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
When English sheep shearer Chris Stewart (once a drummer for Genesis) bought an isolated farmhouse in the mountains outside of Granada, Spain, he was fully aware that it didn't have electricity, running water, or access to roads.
Stewart's hilarious and beautifully written passages are deep in their honest perceptions of the place and the sometimes xenophobic natives, whose reception of the newcomers ranges from warm to gruff.
Stewart, a former drummer in Genesis, middle-aged travel writer and professional sheepshearer, never quite explains why he and his wife, Ana, decided to quit England 11 years ago for a dilapidated farm without electricity, water or even a road in Andaluc!a, Spain.

Stewart's experience as a fighter pilot comes into play in vivid flying scenes featuring the beautiful but tough-as-nails USAF Capt. Tai Lei, but the scope of his ambitious fourth thriller is much larger.
But Stewart is impressively skilled at presenting the entire tapestry of his war—the many threads of the terrorist, allied and American forces—and should hold his readers' interest.
Chris Stewart’s literary torque wrench cranks up the tension to an unbearable point in this stark tale of the war on terror.
