Thomas supported the record with tour dates in Europe and Texas, and afterwards he relocated to Austin, where he spent the next four years expanding his musical horizons and honing a more contemporary sound.

King also continues to expand his dramatic career begun with "O Brother." He played the lead role and acted as musical director for the New Orleans stage production "Goodnight Irene: The Legacy of Leadbelly" and was cast as Blind Willie Johnson and as himself in the upcoming Martin Scorsese PBS production "The Blues."
Born Chris Thomas in 1964 and raised in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, LA, he later added the stage name King in the time-honored fashion of both blues and hip-hop performers.
King eventually returned to America and set up his 21st Century Blues studio and label in New Orleans, sensing it as a receptive home for his independent operations based on the success of such Dirty South hip-hop acts as OutKast, Mystikal and Juvenile.

Not only is Thomas King back in the blues on "Red Mud," but he's in an all-acoustic setting, as basic as you can get (and as far from his soul-funk period as you can get, too).
His past career decisions suggest that Thomas King was frustrated by his inability, as he said in a 1978 interview at Cliff Antone's club in Austin, to reach more of an audience, especially African-Americans his own age.
But Thomas King's voice is in the blues, and now that (it appears) he's accepted his gift for what it is, he is playing the best music of his career.

Bluegrass and traditional folk music fans will know Chris Thomas King from his role in O Brother, Where Art Thou, but blues fans already knew this skilled songwriter, singer and guitarist from his years on the blues festival circuit.
Raised in a musical family steeped in blues tradition, Thomas King's first album from 1986 is reissued here, thanks to Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Records.
While King has proven himself outside of New Orleans and grown immeasurably as an artist, with contracts with Private Music and other labels, and making the rounds on the festival circuit, this album has value as a document of where King was at, musically, in his teens.
