Von der Ahe knew nothing about the game, but his curiosity about those large crowds convinced him to purchase a controlling interest in the Browns and to turn the Grand Avenue park into a virtual extension of his saloon business, complete with a beer garden actually located in the field of play.
With the National League having banned the sale of alcohol in all its parks in 1879, Von der Ahe's differing philosophy helped provide the impetus for the formation in 1882 of the American Association (which critics derisively dubbed "The Beer and Whiskey League"), and thus the first two-league major league system was born.
Although Cash undoubtedly presses his case too much when he states that, if not for Von der Ahe, major league baseball "might indeed have come to an end throughout the nation," he is correct in highlighting Von der Ahe's instrumental role in helping the sport navigate the turbulent waters of its coming of age.

Von Der Ahe, in fact, played the whole league for suckers, his sole aim being to force his team into the NL, which he did when the money-strapped AA went belly up in 1891 (they become the Cardinals in 1900).
