I know from my constituents that they do not wish to have an outright ban on fireworks, nor do they wish to see the decibel limit on fireworks reduced to such a level that the firework cannot be propelled into the sky and explode in the way that gives pleasure to those watching it.
Our constituents want the control of noise to be the prime consideration of the House of Commons in dealing with fireworks, which is why that campaign should be a starting point.
My mother and many other constituents have said that it is a question of balancing the right of pet owners to have nights during which they can sleep without their dogs jumping into bed with them, against the right of others to enjoy fireworks.

In all other Dorset constituencies the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are the most succesfull parties, with Mid-Dorset and North Poole being represented by the Liberal Democrats, and West Dorset, Christchurch and North Dorset by the Conservatives.
Bournemouth and Christchurch were added to the county from Hampshire in the county boundary changes of 1974.

The constituency is dominated by Luton airport and the Vauxhall car plant, and it came as a major blow to the area when Vauxhall announced that they plan to close their plant by mid 2002 with the loss of 2,000 jobs.
The constituency is part of the Neath and Port Talbot local authority area, which voted Yes in the 1997 referendum by a majority of 18,267, which was 66% of the vote in that area - the biggest single Yes percentage in Wales.
A very middle class constituency, it has the fifth highest proportion of non manual workers in the country (78.9% of its workforce) and over a third of its adult population possess higher educational qualifications, compared with a national average of 13% (according to the 1991 census).

The Labour Party won't be feeling too good this morning (especially not the foot-soldiers in the affected constituency, with whom it's hard not to feel some sympathy), but even though the Labour Party cannot say so explicitly (for fear of winding-up D&FW voters), this is not an important result.
Christchurch was just a little too safe to hold on to in 1997.
Although the two-member seats were abolished at the next election, both Down single-member constituencies were won by the party.
