The cathedral was the location of the coronation of Lambert Simnel as 'King Edward VI' a boy pretender who sought unsuccessfully to depose Henry VII of England.

At any rate, Christchurch Cathedral is an important site in that it relates to various influential periods in Irish history.
It is not clear why two cathedrals were constructed so close to each other in time and distance, though St. Patrick's did lie outside the city walls at the time and thus could have skirted around taxes or other issues confronting Christchurch, which was within the walls.
Today, St. Patrick's and Christchurch are both cathedrals of the Church of Ireland, though this confession is a minority one in the heavily Roman Catholic Republic of Ireland.

A number of people had told me that Christchurch is easily the most English settlement in New Zealand, and from the very first moment I could see their point: as I wandered through the beautiful botanic gardens, I found myself following the River Avon, surrounded on either side by Oxford and Cambridge Terraces.
Perhaps that's why Christchurch, beautiful though it is, doesn't quite convince; I kept thinking of a watercolour with too much water and not enough colour, or a theme park version of Little England, though perhaps without the tackiness.
The second time I visited Christchurch I was very kindly put up by another Acorn stalwart, Steve, and his lovely wife and Jenni, in their house out near the beach in northeast Christchurch.

It was rebuilt at least twice in the medieval period, once in 1172 (which was most likely when it became a Cathedral) and again in 1240.
When the Victorians arrived they decided to undertake a serious rebuild of the Cathedral and, as was their standard practice, totally demolished some of the most valuable ancient parts of the structure whilst they were at it (including a 14th century choir and chapel).
Christchurch is the most satisfying to visit of Dublin's three Cathedrals.
