 Welcome Guests from Denmark
Early plein-air painting in Denmark and North Germany (2000) and the Vilhelm Hammershøi retrospective (2003), this is the third project to result from our close collaboration.
Welcome Guests from Denmark focuses on landscape depictions from the ”Golden Age” of the early 19th century; among the best-known painters in this genre are Frederik Sødring (1809–1862), Christen Købke (1810–1848) and Johan Thomas Lundbye (1818–1848).
Unlike students at all the other art academies in Europe, young painters in Copenhagen were taught by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783–1853) to study the landscape in natural light.

Something Lovely From the State of Denmark - September 29, 2005 - The New York Sun
We're all familiar with the clean, spare functionalism of Danish design, but Danish painting and sculpture has had a lesser impact on the public.
It is mostly that we don't get to see much Danish art outside of Denmark - here and there a few doses of Nicolai Abildgaard (1743-1809), Vilhelm Hammershoi (1862-1916), or Christen Kobke (1810-48).
There are tightly woven, competent yet academic paintings of flowers by J.L. Jensen and Sophie Henck; of interiors by Christen Dalsgaard, Carl Holsoe, Carl Bloch, and Carl Thomsen; and of landscapes by Vilhelm Kyhn, and Peder M0nsted.

Amazon.com: Christen Kobke: Books: Sanford Schwartz   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Scarcely known outside of his native Denmark, painter Christen Kobke (1810-1848), like his contemporary Soren Kierkegaard, was ``attuned to the sheer momentariness of things.'' His jewel-like, realist scenes of everyday life radiate a healing clarity.
His miniaturist precision reveals him as an analyst of the space within a painting, fluent in the language of the Dutch masters, later that of Degas and Seurat.
In this sensitive, richly illustrated monograph, Schwartz, an art critic and essayist for the New Yorker and the Atlantic, performs a valuable service by introducing Kobke to an American audience.

Peder Mork Monsted, (1859-1941) - Lawrence J. Cantor and Company
Here he studied at the Academy between 1875 and 1876, under Andries Fritz (1828 1906), a landscape and portrait painter, and was taught figure painting by Julius Exner (1825 1910).
Here too he would have come across the work of artists such as Christen Kobke (1810 1848), an outstanding colourist and Pieter Christian Skorgaard (1817 1875), a romantic nationalist painter, a knowledge of whose work is seen in the Danish landscapes and beech forests of Monsted's.
Monsted travailed extensively throughout his long career, being a frequent visitor to Switzerland, Italy and North Africa.

But the man has been unable to hold a coherent thought since a woman entered the carriage and seated herself across the aisle.
She reminds the man of a portrait by Christen Kobke of Mrs Hoegh-Guldberg (though he cannot recall either of these names), which he saw, and felt strangely moved and saddened by, in a museum in Denmark a few years before.
But unlike Mrs Hoegh-Guldberg, this woman has short brown hair and wears jeans, trainers and a canary-yellow sweater.
