hristiaan Rudolph de Wet was born at Leeukop in the Smithfield District on the 7th of October, 1854 and died in Klipfontein, Dewetsdorp on the 3rd of February, 1922.
De Wet, who had in the meantime been reelected as commander in chief of the Free State forces, by an overwhelming vote, put up a gallant defence of Bethlehem but the odds against him were too great and he was forced to take Steyn and the government with him on commando.
De Wet was inspired by Steyn’s thought that the Afrikaner would emerge from the struggle with greater strength, and his despondency soon gave way to the desire to share in the economic, political and moral reconstruction of his people.

In the meanwhile I received a report from General Piet de Wet, who was at Dewetsdorp, notifying me that the English forces outnumbered his own so enormously that he could not withstand their advance.
But General Piet de Wet differed from me on this point, and held that we ought to keep in front of the English, and I was at last compelled to give in to him.
