 HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH*
Peter’s, had been chosen, and a rush was made for the cardinal’s palace to loot it, as the custom was when a cardinal was elected pope.
Peter was energetic of mind and in action, a shrewd observer, magnified his office, and never yielded an inch in the matter of papal prerogative.
Peter argued that, by fostering the schism, Gregory and his rival had forfeited jurisdiction, and the duty of calling a representative council of Christendom devolved on the college of cardinals.

Peters shows that he realizes that he is overstating the case when he writes: "The crucial violence is usually perpetrated by a smallish number of actors...with a still larger group enjoying the spectacle of the violence and, perhaps looting." (pp.
Peters wrote over the past several years as reactions to world events, and some of his observations are a bit dated and proved to be incorrect.
Peters (and the thing that made this book a sometimes difficult and laborious read) is that he tends to ramble at times and venture into topics, such as religion, about which he is perhaps not as qualified to speak as authoritatively as he is about foreign policy and geopolitics.

 HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH*
But these ministers are nowhere represented as priests in any other sense than Christians generally are priests, with the privilege of a direct access to the throne of grace in the name of their one and eternal high-priest in heaven.
The sacrifice which all Christians are exhorted to offer is the sacrifice of their person and property to the Lord, and the spiritual sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise.
Every Christian congregation was a charitable society, regarding the care of the widow and orphan, the poor and the stranger as a sacred trust; and hence the great importance of the bishop as the administrative officer by whom the charitable funds were received and the alms disbursed.

Marygrace Peters, O.P.: The Beguines: Feminine Piety Derailed
The brief visitation of the Beguines into Christian history provides some insight into the possibilities that existed for composing a life of lay female piety and evidence of the obstacles encountered by virtue of the social structures that had hold of the day.
The impact of the Beguines upon the Christian story was as inexorable as that of a locomotive that quickly gained momentum and proceeded on course with intense velocity.
They are often composed of Christian lay people who struggle to deepen their commitment to the apostolic ideal, women and men, side by side.

Also brief family history and immigration summaries are given at the end of Book One of the records, scattered among pre-1900 burial records and given for 25th wedding anniversaries among the pre-1900 marriage records for many of the early immigrant families in the congregation.
It is of interest to note from the summaries that most of the St. Peters members listed immigrated after 1850, and on the average were about 25 to 30 years old when they came.
Of special interest to me is the fact that close to 45% of the total early members of St. Peters Church came from a 20 mile square area of Western Pomerania centered by the city of Loitz and bordered by the cities of Demmin, Treptow, Gulzow, Greifswald, Stralsund, Richtenberg, and Tribsees.

It is therefore of critical importance that Christian ethics engages with the genetics debate, since it affects not just the way we perceive ourselves and the natural world, but also has wider implications for our society.
This book considers ethical issues arising out of specific practices in human genetics, including genetic screening, gene patenting, gene therapy, genetic counselling as well as feminist concerns.
Genetics and Christian Ethics argues for a particular theo-ethical approach that derives from a modified version of virtue ethics, drawing particularly on a Thomistic understanding of the virtues, especially prudence or practical wisdom and justice.
