In 1996, the National Peasants' Christian Democrat Party (PNÅ¢CD) dominated the CDR and were elected at a time when the economy was failing.
Trying to save the tarnished image of President Emil Constantinescu's centrist Democratic Convention of Romania (CDR), elected in 1996, the new Isărescu government focused on the improving the economic and social situation of the country for a population that was bitterly dissatisfied.
Their inability to lead the country out of cruel poverty opened the way to extreme nationalist parties with their demagogical political platforms appealing for a pure national state and making the "others" (Jews especially) responsible for the poor situation of the country.

The party was resurrected by Corneliu Coposu and Ion Raţiu in December 1989 under the name Partidul Naţional Ţărănesc Creştin şi Democrat (PNŢCD, Christian-Democratic National Peasants' Party).
Many thousands of party members were imprisoned when the party was banned by the Communists in 1947, and both the party leader Iuliu Maniu and his deputy Ion Mihalache died in jail.
