GELLERT, CHRISTIAN FURCHTEGOTT (1715-1769), German poet, was born at Hainichen in the Saxon Erzgebirge on the 4th of July 1715.
Owing to shyness and weak health Gellert gave up all idea of entering the ministry, and, establishing himself in 1745 as privatdocent in philosophy at the university of Leipzig, lectured on poetry, rhetoric and literary style with much success.
The esteem and veneration in which Gellert was held by the students, and indeed by persons in all classes of society, wag unbounded, and yet due perhaps less to his unrivalled popularity as a lecturer and writer than to his personal character.

Christian Gellert's Last Christmas   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Gellert was himself the best example of pure moral teaching; and the best which a teacher can give his pupils is faith in the victorious might, and the stability of the eternal moral laws.
Gellert's was no battling, defiant nature, which relies upon itself; he did not hurl his opponents down and go his way; he would convince them, and so they were always ready to encounter him.
In Gellert, however, this melancholy had a more peculiar phase: a sort of timidity had rooted itself in him, connected with his weak chest, and that secret gnawing pain in his head; it was a fearfulness which his manner of life only tended to increase.

 December 13th
Lucy was a native of Syracuse, and sought in marriage by a young nobleman of that city; butshe had determined to devote herself to a religious life, and persistently refused the addresses of her suitor, whom she still further exasperated by distributing the whole of her large fortune among the poor.
He thereupon accused her to the governor, Paschasius, of professing Christian doctrines, and the result was her martyrdom, under the persecution of the Emperor Dioclesian.
A curious legend regarding St. Lucy is, that on her lover complaining to her that her beautiful eyes haunted him day and night, she cut them out of her head, and sent them to him, begging him now to leave her to pursue, unmolested, her devotional aspirations.

During the past five years CPO has begun to remedy that shortage, first with two excellent full-length programs featuring bass-baritone Klaus Mertens and fortepianist Ludger Remy.
Here Remy returns, this time accompanying soprano Dorothee Mields in a program of Odes set to texts by the composer's esteemed friend Christian Furchtegott Gellert.
Performers no less distinguished than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau have included C.P.E.'s Gellert Odes on their programs, and given the composer's heartfelt instructions detailed in his preface to the published edition (reprinted in full in the accompanying booklet), they also were clearly among his own most cherished works.
