Christian Jacq - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christian Jacq (born 1947) is a French author and Egyptologist.
Jacq's series offers a simplified vision of the life of the pharaoh: he has two vile power-hungry siblings, Shanaar, his decadent older brother, and Dolora, his corrupted older sister who married his teacher.
Jacq gives Ramesses only three biological children: Kha'emweset, Meritamen (she being the only child of Nefertari, the two others being from Iset) and Merneptah.

hristian Jacq, born in Paris in 1947, was thirteen years old when he read a work that was to change the course of his life: The History of Ancient Egyptian Civilization, by Jacques Pirenne.
Jacq was already an occasional poet, and this reading inspired him to start his first novel.
With a doctorate in Egyptian Studies from the Sorbonne, Christian Jacq established his academic reputation in numerous scholarly articles and became a producer for one of France's leading radio stations.

Jacq, author of the popular Ramses quintet, introduces the first installment of his new four-volume novel set in ancient Egypt during the last years of the reign of Ramses the Great.
The strength of Jacq is that he is able to gather the scattered facts of Egyptian history, together with his own imagination, and weave a story.
Jacq overemphasizes his tenacity, simplicity, efficiency and effectiveness all of which would be a trifle too good to be true save he is affected by an arrogance born of sheer over-confidence.

The Great Secret by Christian Jacq
Yet I wouldn't file them under fantasy, as Jacq explains on the flyleaf that he has written this series to try and delineate the mysteries of resurrection, beliefs and practices central to the Egyptian civilization.
It would have been even better if Jacq had added an appendix about the life and times of this pharaoh; the maps are useful, but there is not even a date given for his reign.
Jacq's characters still tend to be either pure hearted heroes or evil villains and their direct, simple style is more like that of a folktale than a modern novel, a style which admirably suits the story.

 [No title]
Jacq, a jolly figure, is much given to chuckling and laughing as he recalls with great humour and no little satisfaction how a bronze-age pharaoh, born in 1279 BC, has not only made him a fortune, but turned him into a celebrity.
Perhaps it is that, in Ramses, Christian Jacq has created yet another modern fairy tale cast in the mould of Star Wars or Superman.
Its themes of the battle of good against evil, the power of magic, the potency of love and, above all, the indomitable nature of the human spirit, are universal themes which Jacq has managed to intertwine in his deceptively simple prose.

Jacq continues his popular Stone of Light series with another suspenseful installment chronicling the lives and adventures of a select group of gifted craftspeople responsible for designing, building, and decorating the magnificent monuments of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens in ancient Egypt.
It remains the task of Paneb the Ardent, the adopted son of the Wise Woman and Nefer the Silent, to protect the forbidden village, his family, and the Brotherhood's most precious treasure from a cunning adversary.

The Tree of Life by Christian Jacq
Jacq's easy-to-read style is a winner as usual, but often his plots can be very linear.
Not here, as there are two main strands that intertwine, as well as the fortunes of several other characters.
There is, as usual, an Old Testament feel about this work where nothing is done by halves and Iker is another one of Jacq's formidably fit and able but driven characters who seems to be able to accomplish anything he sets his mind to.

As Jacq has numerous characters traveling and conspiring, he sacrifices depth and detail in order to include all of these tangents.
If Jacq had limited himself to one or two characters, he could have provided more details to make the book richer and more developed.
If he intends to write several more books in the series, it might be necessary, for future books, that all of these events and characters are introduced now.

Christian Jacq takes his listeners to a period of turbulence in Egypt and the Levant, mixing time periods, historical figures with fictional characters, and palace intrigue with political infidelity.

A vivid re-creation of the majesty and mystery of ancient times, Ramses has swept across France, creating a national craze for all things Egyptian and becoming the most spectacular phenomenon in French publishing of the last twenty years.
