Christian McBride (born May 31, 1972, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a jazz bassist.
In the jazz community, McBride is widely considered one of the best bassists of his generation.
McBride has performed and recorded with a huge number of jazz legends, including Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Roy Haynes, Pat Metheny and Chick Corea, as well as with newer musicians like Joshua Redman, Nicholas Payton, Benny Green and Sting.

Christian McBride first came to prominence as one of the generation of "Young Lions" that emerged in the late 1980s and the early 1990s.

One look at bassist Christian McBride’s latest release with, of all things, George Duke listed as its producer, and it might give any self-respecting traditional jazz fan a case of the frightened chills.
He was asked why he didn’t play an electric bass, and answered by saying that he’d already worked so long and hard at getting just the right tone from his stand-up playing, that he didn’t want to give all that up just for the sake of "modernizing" his sound.
McBride is joined here by Tim Warfield on tenor sax, Charles Craig on keyboards and Gregory Hutchenson at the drums.

McBride salvages this particular nightmare with a bravura solo, but you can't help feeling that he's in session mode: rescuing a duff track rather than pursuing any singular vision.

What the Christian McBride Band seems to be saying instead is: "A wide range of music grew up on what we play." That range — hip-hop, funk and techno — is articulated on this album with remarkable clarity.

Indeed, if McBride began his professional career in the traditionalist trenches of the early nineties, the turn of the century has seen him refocus his gaze on the rock, soul, and fusion of the 70’s and 80’s.
That said, the greatest success of this disc by far lies in McBride’s commitment to the aesthetic he is mining (like on his earlier works), his patent refusal to settle for the facile, “commercial” resolutions inherent in the genre.
It is when McBride lets his funk-rock influences inform his bass lines, forming hard-line, up-for-the-down-stroke riffs, that he begins to reach the heights of the records that inspired this one.
