Norsk Musikkinformasjon: Christian Sinding - Biography
That most of Sinding’s music later was left in neglect may be owing in large measure to the general reaction against Romanticism but also, perhaps, to the fact that during his lifetime he was somewhat overrated.
Sinding spent almost forty years in long periods of residence in Germany and was closely tied to German music and German cultural circles in general.
Christian Sinding died in Oslo on December 3rd 1941.

It’s rather sad that Sinding laboured so long (he began it in 1887, the second version was performed in 1890 and a third, final, version had its première in 1894) to produce so little.
In Sinding’s day contemporary music was not a taboo, limited to a noisy clique, it was normal for several new romantic symphonies to come out every season, they were not necessarily expected to last (did Weingartner and Nikisch ever conduct these works again?).
It is a reproduction a painting by Johann Christian Clausen Dahl, showing a fl, foam-flecked sea almost meeting a threatening fl sky with a strip of red sunset between them and a steamer battling its way across the scene.

Christian Sinding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christian August Sinding (January 11, 1856–December 3, 1941) was a Norwegian composer.
The large number of short, lyrical piano pieces and songs that Sinding wrote has led to many seeing him as the heir to his fellow countryman, Edvard Grieg, not so much in musical style but as a Norwegian composer with an international reputation.
Sinding is best remembered today for one of his piano works, Frühlingsrauschen (Rustle of Spring, 1896).

Remembered by ambitious amateur pianists for his Rustle of Spring, Christian Sinding was a more important figure than this might suggest in the music of his native Norway, where, in his time, he was second only to Grieg.
Sinding's orchestral compositions include four symphonies, three concertos for violin, his own original instrument, for which he wrote other pieces with orchestra, and a piano concerto, including his Légende.
Sinding's piano music consists chiefly of shorter genre pieces, of which Rustle of Spring is characteristic.

Sinding's first two symphonies aren't bad works by any means: they just lack originality.
It's very hard to tell with post-Wagnerian but conservative, late Romantic symphonic music like this whether that "been there, heard that" quality results from the cut of the melodic ideas themselves (however attractive), or their not terribly organic working out.
The very impactful sonics display a little glare in loud passages, a function of a bit too much reverberation, but there's no denying the atmospheric warmth of both slow movements.

Christian Sinding -- Website of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra discusses Sinding's Piano Concerto in D Flat Major and provides a biography.
The name of Christian Sinding (1856-1941) was once as much associated with Norway as that of Grieg, not least due to his famous piano work "Frühlingsrauschen." Many of Sinding's other 130 compositions in various genres are long forgotten.
At a time of growing interest in the late Romantic period, however, Sinding's bold, full-blooded music is experiencing a revival.

Dating from 1912, Sinding's first completed opera will surprise those who know him from his songs which are generally in the style of the German lied or tinted with Norwegian folk material.
This 79-minute work, in a prelude and two acts, is about as close to Wagner as any composer of the period cared to come.
