Magma (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magma is a French progressive rock band founded in 1969 by classically-trained drummer Christian Vander, who claimed as his inspiration a "vision of humanity's spiritual and ecological future" that profoundly disturbed him.
Beyond Christian Vander, the drummer/composer, the most well-known of the original Magma lineup was probably Jannick Top, the bassist/co-composer (who has gone on to produce albums for Celine Dion).
Wurdah Ïtah may technically be a Christian Vander solo project, in that it was composed entirely by him, bore his name during its original release as the soundtrack for the film Tristan et Iseult, and did not feature all of Magma's then-current musicians.

Vander gathered players from all over the country who were dissatisfied with the typical French habit of slavishly copying American or British rock and jazz musicians.
Vander's vision was grand, and apocalyptic: He developed a concept for Magma's recorded output, proposing a nine-part sci-fi-ish opus that would tell the story of the Kobaians, who'd fled the degradation of life on Earth and settled on another planet, only to find they'd dragged Earth's miseries along with them; the solution was annihilation.
Christian Vander's drive toward a deeply personal music mirrors that of his countryman Claude Debussy, who at one point began billing himself as "Claude Debussy, musicien français." In order to create a new kind of music, Vander invented, finally, a music that was unique to France, yet rarely sounds remotely French.

This year, however, Pastor George Vander Weit of North Hills CRC in the Detroit suburb of Troy is trying to blow the whistle on Klassen and the other four members of the Interclassical Conference interim committee.
Vander Weit objected to a letter sent by the interim committee to all CRC member churches announcing a conference this November in suburban Chicago to respond to Synod 1996's decision to continue to allow the ordination of women elders and ministers.
In the letter's final sentence, Vander Weit indicated that his letter to the members of the Interclassical Conference interim committee might not be the end of the matter.

 Gnosis Ratings
Under the leadership of drummer/vocalist/chief conceptualist Christian Vander, Magma so thoroughly reinvented the wheel aligned between jazz and rock that any preconceived critical strategy for appraising their aesthetic is rendered woefully inadequate to the task, akin to demonstrating the grandeur of the Sistine Chapel with the use of stick figures.
Vander's side long contribution, "Riah Sahiltaahk", introduces his penchant for phrase repetition as both a lyrical and a musical device, and his use of syncopation and instrumental counterpoint as a means to counteract the potential monotony of prolonged repetition.
Vander's drumming is exceptional, subtly avoiding the spotlight while providing enough rhythmic variation and complexity to keep the melodic repetition from becoming overbearing.

Heavily active in ecclesiastical affairs at an age when most men in better health choose to enjoy their retirement, Vander Kam made clear that his concept of an enjoyable retirement was planting seminaries, founding congregations, and becoming a key figure in the founding of a new denomination.
After leaving the Christian Reformed denomination in 1992, Vander Kam devoted much of his time to the church order study committee of the Alliance of Reformed Churches, a group of 55 congregations with 10,800 members, most of which have left the CRC in recent years.
Vander Kam is survived by his wife Elaine, two daughters and three sons, and over ten grandchildren.

In the final months of the 1960s, drummer Christian Vander had a vision of an "eternal" music saga, concerning the future disintegration of Earth and the subsequent efforts of a few citizens to begin a new society on the distant planet Kobaia.
Vander also decided that this new music was not to be sung in his native French; he thought the French language sounded weak (Lake 18).
Although Christian Vander is white, his music and cosmology have interesting parallels with the theories of Jones and Corbett, demonstrating that perhaps their conceptions of "otherness" are not strictly racially bounded after all.

The most novel aspect of Magma's albums was that Vander actually invented a constructed language, Kobaian, in which all the lyrics were sung.
So many musicians played with Magma over the years, who then went on to form their own solo projects and/or spinoff acts, that the term Zeuhl was created to refer to these bands and the French jazz fusion/symphonic rock scene that grew around them.

Ground and Sky review - Christian Vander - To Love
There are lyrics to this one, but they are in English, which is obviously not Vander's first language (sample: "If you glory the one you can be a soul," "Here now he begins to love/ He is all love/ He is OM OM OM").
Combine these sorts of things with a non-native pronunciation weighting down a generally strong emotional delivery, and the end result is that it sounds really odd, more in an awkward way than a pleasingly idiosyncratic one.
Makes me wonder why Christian didn't just write the lyrics in French to begin with, if it was intended to be such a personal statement.
