Christian apologetics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christian Apologetics is the field of study concerned with the systematic defense of Christianity.
Christian apologetics are meant, however, to argue that Christianity is reasonable and in accordance with the evidence that can be examined, analogous to the use of the term in the Apology of Socrates, written by Plato.
Christian scholar Gary Habermas is recognized as being one of the foremost defenders of the historicity of Jesus Christ's resurrection.

Christianity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Christianity is an Abrahamic religion based on the life, teachings, death by crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth as described in the New Testament.
Crucial beliefs in Christian teaching are Jesus' incarnation, atonement, crucifixion, and resurrection from the dead to redeem humankind from sin and death; and the belief that the New Testament is a part of the Bible.
During the Crusades, Christian atrocities against Jews in German and Hungarian towns, later also in those of France and England, and in the massacres of non-combatants in Palestine and Syria initiated a tradition of Christian anti-Semitism, which was further bolstered by the blood libel cult, and continued into the 1500s by the Spanish Inquisition.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Apologetics
He insists also that it is in Christianity that the destiny of the Hebrew religion to become the religion of the world is to find its realization, and hence it is the followers of Christ, and not the unbelieving Jews, that are the true children of Israel.
The Christians were branded as atheists, and as they held aloof from the public functions also, which were invariably associated with these false rites, they were accused of being enemies of the State.
Enlarging on these ideas, the apologists contrast the logical coherence of the religious tenets of Christianity, and its lofty ethical teaching, with the follies and inconsistencies of polytheism, the low ethical principles of its philosophers, and the indecencies of its mythology and of some of its rites.

What is an Apologist? - Christian Heritage Center - Staunton Virginia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
APOLOGISTS; the title conventionally assigned to a group of writers, chiefly in the 2nd century, who attempted to provide, at first in Greek but later in Latin, semi-philosophical defenses of Christianity and criticisms of Greco-Roman culture.
Apologies assumed the form of briefs written to defend Christians against the accusations current in the 2nd Century, especially the charges that their religion was novel or godless or expressed in immoral cultic practices.
As a Christian teacher he addressed to the emperor Antoninus Pius, about 150, a treatise that included a defense of Christian morality, a proof (largely based on the Old Testament) of the truth of the Christian revelation and a description of Christian worship (to show that it was not immoral).

From a church-historical point of view we can speak generically of the Christian tradition, believing as we do that a living corpus of truth (sometimes called orthodoxy) has been preserved from the beginning to our time and that there is a discernibly Christian way of life.
Christian rationality is merely an island in the ocean of universal rationality.
"To settle the issue the Christian apologist must place himself upon the position of his opponent, assuming the correctness of his method merely for argument's sake, in order to show him on such a position that the facts are not facts and the laws are not laws.

When you become a Christian, I want to be the first one to know." Flew laughed and responded, "I think you deserve that right." The doors closed.
Christian scholars in particular should bear in mind the need to build relationships with non-believing scholars, he said.
Christians should rejoice that Flew has adopted a belief in God but remember that mere belief in God falls short of the belief in Jesus Christ that Scripture requires for eternal life, Habermas said.

 task of Christian apologist
Christians have a biblical mandate to engage in apologetics.
Christians rather should make use of the particular gifts God has given them while providing answers “for the hope that is in [them].” The goal of apologetics is not to win arguments for the sake of winning arguments or to engage in some kind of intellectual one-upmanship.
Many Christians, this writer included, can attest to having heard the words of an apologist at one point in their life and suddenly a “light” turned on inside of them that convinced them of the truth of what they were hearing.

Myth Matters - Christianity Today Magazine
Unlike so many contemporary Christian academics who passively (if not unconsciously) accept the existing assumptions on which their discipline is based and then meekly ask that God's name be mentioned now and then, Lewis went on the offensive and challenged the assumptions themselves.
One of Lewis's greatest services as an apologist was to demonstrate that in the person of Christ we encounter a figure whose life, death, and resurrection, far from standing in opposition to the mythic heroes of paganism, in fact present a literal, historical fulfillment of what all those earlier myths were really about.
Christian thought (like the Platonic metaphysics that preceded it) is deductive, for it begins with a priori assumptions that must be accepted as givens before logical thought can begin (e.g., the existence of God, the authority of Scripture, the immortality of the soul, the possibility and reliability of divine revelation).

For Christianity to have taken root in the culture in which it was birthed, and with contemporary witnesses available for verification or contradiction, the man known as Jesus of Nazareth had to have existed.
At the beginning of the second century and later, Gnostic Christians took it upon themselves to write accounts of the periods of Jesus’ life that the Gospels were silent on.
In addition to the Christian and Gnostic witnesses to the existence of Jesus, there are a few scattered references from Jewish and pagan sources and the arguments of those hostile to early Christianity.

Certainly, there were debates as to whether the new Christians should keep the same customs as the Jews kept, and that debate was won in favor of the views held by those who thought many of the Jewish customs and laws and been done away with.

He has also been described as "one of the best loved 20th century Christian apologists" and the "apostle to the skeptics" because he decisively answered common objections people throw up against accepting Christ as Savior.
Lewis gave a number of talks in those years on what he called "mere Christianity," that is, the common or central beliefs of the faith.
Lewis was greatly influenced by two writers, George MacDonald, the 19th century Scottish Presbyterian minister and novelist, and G.K. Chesterton, a Christian apologist and London journalist.

Considered a significant twentieth-century book by Christians of various traditions of faith, MERE CHRISTIANITY is well-suited to being read because the book is a revised version of some addresses given by Lewis, an Oxford literature professor, on the BBC in the early 1940s.
While the defense of historical Christianity is one part of understanding what "Mere Christianity" is, the other part is that it is intended to be accessible to anyone.
This book seems to be extremely popular in Christian circles, and it's easy to see why, since it makes a pseudo-intellectual defense of the faith that must be appealing to believers who want to read something to strengthen their faith.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: How Christian Is Narnia? In the News: explorefaith.org
Both Christian advocates, as well as those who would be opposed to Christian teaching for children, seem to think that Lewis intended to teach a specific faith in Narnia.
Lewis created a great allegory, and part of its greatness was that it encompassed universal messages of sacrifice, struggle, and redemption that are at the heart of all religious faith, and what it means to be fully human.
Those Christian apologists today who would like to use the Narnia films to turn people to faith in Christ might do better by relying on the myth of Narnia to work its own magic.

The What and Why of Apologetics
The well trained Christian apologist can work on the front lines to help silence the critics and recapture the intellectual high ground.  As C.S. Lewis said, "Good philosophy must exist, if for no other reason, because bad philosophy needs to be answered."
No soul is won by argument alone; there are clearly other issues at stake, like moral and volitional barriers.  Even though we acknowledge that the Holy Spirit ultimately reaps the harvest, God is surely best honored by a clear, reasoned, and literate presentation of the gospel and all things pertaining to it.
