Rockridge Institute - Two Models of Christianity
Conservative Christians are not conservative because they interpret the Bible-all of it-purely literally.
The link in conservative Christianity between laissez-faire free-market capitalism and morality is thus metaphorical through and through, as is the interpretation of the Bible via Strict Father morality, and Strict Father morality itself is metaphorical through and through.
To say this is not to "deconstruct" and question the validity of Strict Father morality and conservative Christianity, it is merely to apply an analysis of the concepts involved to enterprises of Biblical interpretation.

Hardly: Shiflett shows that conservative Christians are better educated, wealthier, and wiser to the ways of the world than anyone in the media establishment gives them credit for.
He even reveals that many of those who are currently flocking to conservative churches aren't fully conservative themselves: some even don't agree with all of their new churches' teachings on conservative hot-button issues like abortion and divorce.
But Shiflett demonstrates that whether conservative or more left-of-center, the new members of conservative churches have one thing in common: they're tired of being told by their religious leaders that anything goes.

 TV vs. Conservative Christianity
Although many Christians don't go as far as Rev. Wildman, the basic fear is that people (young people, in particular) are apt to adopt the values depicted on TV and will feel that TV's depiction of life and human relationships is realistic and exemplary.
I quickly reminded him that at one time it was religious heresy to believe that the world was flat and not the center of the universe, or that the tens-of-thousands of "witches" who were burned alive at the stake were, at worst, just mentally ill and not possessed by the devil.
Not totally unrelated is the fact that, historically, Christianity, like most religions, seems to have flourished under decades of testing and even opposition, and it has been most prone to excesses when government supported it.
