Christian perfection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christian Perfection is a controversial Christian doctrine which maintains that after conversion but before death a Christian's soul may be cleansed from the stain of original sin.
Christian perfection, according to Wesley, is “purity of intention, dedicating all the life to God” and “the mind which was in Christ, enabling us to walk as Christ walked.” It is “loving God with all our heart, and our neighbor as ourselves” (A Plain Account of Christian Perfection, 109).
Wesley was clear that Christian perfection did not imply perfection of bodily health or an infallibility of judgment.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Christian and Religious Perfection
Perfect union with God cannot be attained in this life, so man is imperfect in that he lacks the happiness for which he is destined and suffers many evils both of body and soul.
The perfection of the soul increases in proportion with the possession of charity.
Negatively: the obstacles in the way of perfection, which are (1 John 1:16) concupiscence of the eyes, concupiscence of the flesh, and pride of life, are removed by the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, respectively.

 Christian Perfection - President Asa Mahan's 1799-1889
In the Christian, perfection in holiness implies the consecration of his whole being to Christ—the subjection of all his powers and susceptibilities to the control of one principle,—"faith on the son of God." This is what the moral law demands of him in his circumstances.
I argue, that perfection in holiness is attainable in this life, and that the sacred writers intended to teach the doctrine, from the fact, that inspired men made the attainment of this particular state the subject of definite, fervent, and constant prayer.
All acknowledge it to be the duty of the Christian to aim at perfection in holiness.

 Catalyst: Contemporary Evangelical Perspectives
Christian perfection, or entire sanctification, may be the most controversial of Wesley’s teachings.
Christian perfection, he said, is “purity of intention, dedicating all the life to God” and “the mind which was in Christ, enabling us to walk as Christ walked.” It is “loving God with all our heart, and our neighbor as ourselves” (A Plain Account of Christian Perfection [Epworth, 1952] 109).
Second, Wesley believed Christian perfection to be promised to everyone who believed—it is not only for a relatively small number of persons who belong to a monastic community, but for all persons in the midst of everyday life.

Then when it is God's own perfection which you and I must have and which alone we will accept of ourselves and we hold ourselves to that standard always, you can see at once that that will be for you and me only to hold ourselves constantly in the presence of the judgement of God.
It is given "for the perfecting of the saints" and it is given "till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ."
Let us look again at the statement that the gifts are for the perfecting of the saints, "till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ." There is the pattern.

Christian Perfection, as here required, is not freedom from temptation, either from our constitution or from things that are about us.
Sinners may strongly wish to become Christians, and Christians may strongly wish or desire to be rid of all their sins, and may pray for it, even with agony.
But Christians have taken the other ground, and think of nothing but that they are to go on in sin, and all they hope for is to be forgiven, and when they die made holy in heaven.

A Plain Account of Christian Perfection
In this is perfection, and glory, and happiness: The royal law of heaven and earth is this, `Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.' The one perfect good shall be your one ultimate end.
For our perfection is not like that of a tree, which flourishes by the sap derived from its own root, but, as was said before, like that of a branch which, united to the vine, bears fruit; but, severed from it, is dried up and withered.
For instance: Even one that is perfected in love may mistake with regard to another person, and may think him, in a particular case, to be more or less faulty than he really is. And hence he may speak to him with more or less severity than the truth requires.

Here he qualified perfection further as he insisted that no one, regardless of the degree of sanctification, is ever beyond needing the intercession of the merit of Christ.
However profoundly perfection may be expounded with respect to sin in Wesley's sense of "voluntary", too much remains unsaid for that corruption which is none the less culpable for its being involuntary.
In his discussion of Christian perfection, Wesley amplifies the truth that the all-consuming fixation of the Christian's life is God.

A Christian life must radiate with all the names describing the meaning of Christ: those we imitate and those we worship if the man of God is to be perfect and does not mutilate the good with anything evil as the Apostle says (2Tim 3.17).

And this is the more needful to be done, because, in the verse already repeated, the Apostle speaks of himself as not perfect: "Not," saith he, "as though I were already perfect." And yet immediately after, in the fifteenth verse, he speaks of himself, yea, and many others, as perfect.
Christian perfection, therefore, does not imply (as some men seem to have imagined) an exemption either from ignorance or mistake, or infirmities, or temptations.
