Christian view of marriage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christian marriage is seen by Saint Paul (especially Ephesians chapter 5) as paralleling the relationship between Christ and the Church, a theological view which is a development of the Old Testament view that saw a parallel between marriage and the relationship between God and Israel.
Marriage forms the foundation of the family, the fundamental unit of the referring community (ordinarily the parish).
The primary purpose of marriage is to fulfill a vocation in the nature of man and woman, for the procreation and education of children, and to stand as a symbol of the mystical union between Christ and his Church.

Religious aspects of marriage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In virtually all religions, marriage is a long-term union between two people and is established with ceremonies and rituals.
Most Christian churches give some form of blessing to a marriage; the wedding ceremony typically includes some sort of pledge by the community to support the couple's relationship.
By contrast, Buddhism does not encourage or discourage marriage, although it does teach how one might live a happily married life and emphasizes that married vows are not to be taken slightly (see separate article for details).

 Christian Marriage
Marriage, according to Ephesians 5, is to be a mirror which reflects the love of Christ for the church and the love which the church has for Christ.
God clearly lays down that marriage is between one man and one woman, and that the marriage partners are to leave the closest of family ties, that of parent and child, in order that a man might cleave unto his wife, and enter into the closest possible intimacy with her.
"Marriage was ordained for the mutual help of husband and wife; for the increase of mankind with a legitimate issue, and of the church with an holy seed; and for preventing of uncleanness." After companionship, the main purpose of marriage is for the procreation of children.

Christian Century: Marriage After Modernity: Christian Marriage in Postmodern Times. - Review - book review
Thatcher has constructed a systematic Christian vision of marriage that is substantive, provocative and eminently clear-sighted--a vision that prods us to reexamine the entrenched assumptions of modernity that have led to the current crisis of marriage.
The novelty and power of Thatcher's accomplishment is evident, first of all, in his central thesis that the core of Christian marriage should lie in the partners' "mutually administered sacrament." An Anglican theologian, Thatcher converts the Catholic notion of sacrament into a Protestant framework where it does not imply indissolubility.
Instead, he argues that marriage should be viewed as a sacrament in the sense that it expresses "divine love." Divine love is realized in marriage in "generous, committed, human love," and the core purpose of marriage is to live out this sacred bond.

The alterative view, that marriage is entered into in stages, renders superfluous those easy temporal distinctions between "before" and "after" provided by the identification between the beginning of a marriage with a wedding.
This view combined the emphasis in Roman law on marriage being defined by mutual consent, together with the biblical emphasis on marriage as a "one flesh" unity of partners.
The term "processual marriage" is sometimes used to describe these arrangements, that is, "where the formation of marriage was regarded as a process rather than a clearly defined rite of passage" (S. Parker Informal Marriage, Cohabitation and the Law, 1750-1989).

The declaration, which affirmed the Christian view of marriage, was signed by representatives of the Catholic Church, the National Council of Churches (NCC), the Southern Baptist Convention, and the National Association of Evangelicals.
The interdependence of healthy Christian community is clearly exemplified in loving one another (John 13:34), forgiving one another (Ephesians 4:32), confessing to one another (James 5:16), and submitting to one another (Ephesians 5:21).
We believe that when a marriage is true to God's loving design it brings spiritual, physical, emotional, economic, and social benefits not only to a couple and family but also to the Church and to the wider culture.

Marriage is not a menu for sexual lifestyles, a vehicle for the delivery of government benefits, a way of gaining self-esteem, a political advantage for oppressed special interest groups, an artifact of law, a sociological experiment, or a mechanism for securing social respectability.
Real marriage is and always will be a two-in-oneflesh union between a man and a woman who are committed to each other in love and for life, and who are open to the blessing of children whom they are prepared to love and educate to the best of their abilities.

All Christians are called to, and in baptism are anointed for, the imitation of the Christ who came "not to be served but to serve" (Mark 10:45).
For authentic Christian spouses, Christian marriage is always a challenge to which they are called to respond as followers of the Christ who is for them the prophetic symbol of God.
Every Christian is called to, and in baptism is anointed for, the imitation of the Christ who proclaimed that he came "not to be served but to serve" (Mark 10:45), and who instructed his disciples that the way to become first in the kingdom of God is to be the servant of all (Mark 9:35).

Marriage has God for its Author, and was from the very beginning a kind of foreshadowing of the Incarnation of His Son; and therefore there abides in it a something holy and religious; not extraneous, but innate; not derived from men, but implanted by nature.
Marriage, moreover, is a sacrament, because it is a holy sign which gives grace, showing forth an image of the mystical nuptials of Christ with the Church.

They then add that the marriage contract is to be freed from any indissoluble bond, and that separation and divorce are not only to be tolerated but sanctioned by the law; from which it follows finally that, robbed of all its holiness, matrimony should be enumerated amongst the secular and civil institutions.
This religious character of marriage, its sublime signification of grace and the union between Christ and the Church, evidently requires that those about to marry should show a holy reverence towards it, and zealously endeavor to make their marriage approach as nearly as possible to the archetype of Christ and the Church.
Whenever the marriage bond remains intact, then we find marriages contracted with a sense of safety and security, while, when separations are considered and the dangers of divorce are present, the marriage contract itself becomes insecure, or at least gives ground for anxiety and surprises.
