Christian views on witchcraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christian views on witchcraft arise from scriptural, theological, and historical considerations.
There are several references to witchcraft in the Christian Bible, and the strong condemnations of such practices which we read there do not seem to be based so much upon the supposition of fraud as upon the "abomination" of the magic in itself.
Supposing that the belief in witchcraft were an idle superstition, it would be strange that the suggestion should nowhere be made that the evil of these practices only lay in the pretending to the possession of powers which did not really exist.

European Christians in the medieval era, some conservative Christians today, Neopagans and many African religions (past and present) believe that witchcraft can produce effects that are beyond the natural powers of man. In other words, they believe that witchcraft is genuine magic.
In the Bible references to witchcraft are frequent, and the strong condemnations of such practices which we read there do not seem to be based so much upon the supposition of fraud as upon the "abomination" of the magic in itself.
But in witchcraft, as commonly understood, there is involved the idea of a diabolical pact or at least an appeal to the intervention of the spirits of evil.

Witchcraft - Free Encyclopedia of Thelema   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Under the monotheistic religions of the Levant (primarily Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), witchcraft came to be associated with heresy, rising to a fever pitch among the Catholics, Protestants, and secular leadership of the European Late Medieval/Early Modern period.
Necromancy, the conjuring of the spirits of the dead, is also regarded as a typical witchcraft practice; the Biblical 'Witch' of Endor is supposed to have performed it, and it is among the witchcraft practices condemned by Aelfric.
Supposing that the belief in witchcraft were held to be an idle superstition, it would be strange that the suggestion should nowhere be made that the evil of these practices only lay in the pretending to the possession of powers which did not really exist.

Perhaps one of the few points on which Christian demonologists agree is in the belief that witchcraft is a heresy, induced by demons, and that a belief in witchcraft is an essential part of the Christian faith.
European witchcraft is witchcraft and magic that is practiced primarily in the locality of Europe.
History of European witchcraft "In the world of late antiquity or the early Middle Ages, it is impossible to define someone as a witch (as opposed, for example, to an amateur herbalist, a heretic or a scold), and none of the legislation of the time attempted to do so.

I agree that this could be put in Witchcraft, but if Witchcraft gets too long, Witchcraft in the Bible or something similar might be a good place for discussion.
(There's no reason for the Witchcraft article to be dominated by other religions' views of it!) This article could then incorporate all the pertinent material (i.e., both of the verses cited, a discussion of the validity of "interpreting" isolated verses shorn of context, and a link to Biblical hermaneutics, which would need expansion)...
Most Christians who believe in witchcraft believe that it derives its power from forces of evil - by a special pact or by an appeal to those forces, such as Satan, also called Lucifer, or "the devil".

Christian Responses to Witchcraft and Sorcery
Witchcraft (maleficium) was indeed common in pre-Christian Europe, and it was an ancient pagan custom for those who believed maleficium was being used against them or their kin to take personal retaliation.
The sceptical attitude of the Enlightenment was conducive to the belief that the concept of witchcraft was a delusion (Williams 1959:300ff).
Though his study does not deal with witchcraft directly (the only example on Naxos was the evil eye, which was witchcraft as opposed to sorcery in the anthropologists' sense of the terms), Stewart (1991:15) observes that the relationship of both to the Christian world view was very similar.

Practices to which the witchcraft label have been historically applied are those which influence another person's body or property against his or her will, or which are believed, by the person doing the labeling, to undermine the social or religious order.
Where witchcraft is believed to have the power to influence the body or possessions, witches can become a credible cause for disease, sickness in animals, bad luck, sudden death, impotence and other such misfortunes.
Witchcraft practices (in the common, malefic sense) are typically forbidden by law where belief in them exists (as well as being hated and feared by the general populace) while 'folk magic' is tolerated or even accepted wholesale by the people, even if the orthodox establishment objects to it.

Traditional European witchcraft beliefs, such as those typified in the confessions of the Pendle Witches, commonly involve a diabolical pact or at least an appeal to the intervention of the spirits of evil[3].

The term witchcraft (and witch) is a controversial one with a complicated history.Witchcraft is viewed differently in different cultures around the globe.
Both are concerned with the producing of effects using supernatural methods which (though arcane) are held to have power in their own right, whether or not they involve the invocation of deities, spirits, or other supernatural beings.
This is similar to the Eastern Christian trichotomy of the Greek words σώμα (soma), ψυχή (psyche), and νους (nous), wherein the soma is the living body, psyche is the "mind" as we normally use the term, and nous is the faculty capable of apprehending the Divine.

DISCUSSION ON WITCHCRAFT, WICCA NEO-PAGANISM AND AFRICAN TRADITIONS
Whatever the "witchcraft" that was being suppressed in the Great Witch Hunt was, it was not a pagan religion.5 The early Christians disapproved of both pagan religions and witchcraft, but they did not generally confuse them.
In view of the witch hunts now taking place in South Africa, the question of a proper Christian response is not an aca- demic curiosity, but for many people it is an important existential necessity.

Wiccans in the military, especially those who may be posted in countries perceived to be particularly intolerant, will often have their dog tags read "No Religious Preference." Concealment is a traditional Wiccan defense against persecution, so non-denominational dog tags should not contravene a member's request for religious services.

The important difference here is that this view does not claim that witches actually consciously enter into a pact with Satan, which makes it somewhat more reasonable, in light of the fact that actual practitioners of Wicca do not believe in Satan. With a few controversial exceptions such as Santería, Christians do not practice witchcraft.
Since the late Middle Ages, Christians have used the term to refer to people who worshipped and consorted with Satan, the Devil, and/or other demonic forces. In the 13th century, by contrast, the Roman Catholic Church concluded that witchcraft, as such, simply did not exist.
It should also be noted that Strongs definition of the word as including anyone who casts spells certainly includes those who practice Wicca.Further discussion of people accused of being witches, and of those who claim to be witches, may be found in the articles witchcraft and witchhunt.
