Christianna Brand is one of the lesser-known lights of Golden Age detective fiction, which is a shame, because she has enough talent to be far better-known.
Brand knew her stuff when it came to military hospitals, and the details really serve to ground the plot; she knows exactly how the wards would have been laid out, how much medicine the patients would have been given, who did what, who went where...
Brand has a very similar style to Agatha Christie, she is a very accomplished writer in the genre in her own right and does not suffer in comparison with such elevated company.

Christianna Brand, China Thomson, Mary Ann Ashe) is considered to be one of the last writers of the golden age of fiction.
Set in a military hospital during the blitz, this novel is one of Brand's most intricately plotted detection puzzles, executed with her characteristic cleverness and gusto.
Rosie, the naughty little nymphet around whom Christianna Brand weaves her witty and mysterious web, recounts to her family a series of fibs that results in their supposing the unfortunate suitor, Raoul Vernet, to be her base seducer.

Crime Time On-Line - book review - Green for Danger by Christianna Brand
But when a patient dies under anaesthetic, and a nurse who claims to know what went wrong also dies, it's up to Brand's chain-smoking Inspector Cockril to discern which of the six remaining doctors and nurses is a single-minded murderer.
H R F Keating called this the finest novel of the Golden Age detective story, and it's difficult to argue with that assessment.
There isn't a misstep in the machine-precision plotting or concise and perceptive characterisation, and current crime fiction practitioners could do worse than rediscover how 256 pages are all that are required for something as gem-like as this.

A great military hospital is a whole world apart, a world peopled not by stiff, white automata, but by human men and women each with their joys and their sorrows, their loves and their hates.
Christianna Brand knows this world as well as she knows the people who dwell in it ; and against its bright, antiseptic background, its reek of ether, its undercurrent of pity and pain, she has cast her new story an exciting successor to Death in High Heels and Heads You Lose.

Cecil's difficulties in distinguishing the three female characters is more a failing of the author than of his gallant reading.
