St. Thomas Christians An ancient body of Christians on the east and west coasts of India, claiming spiritual descent from the Apostle St. Thomas.
The authorization to possess the land and dwellings erected was granted to Thomas by a deed of paramount Lord and Rajah of Malabar, Cheruman Perumal, said to have been the last of the line, the country having been subsequently divided among his feudatories.
To prevent the spreading of such reports it may be useful to state here of these crosses one is in the Church of Mount St. Thomas, Mylapur, discovered in 1547 after the arrival of the Portuguese in India; other is in the church of Kottayam, Malabar.

 Introduction to the St. Thomas Christians
Thomas Christians are Eastern Orthodox Catholics in the sense that the church originated in the "East" (India).
As is the case with most of the ancient churches, this group of Christians was brought into being by one of the original Apostles of Jesus Christ: St. Thomas.
The church is known in the American See as the St. Thomas Christians which derives its Apostolic Succession from Antioch.

Besides the "Acta Thomae" of which a different and notably shorter redaction exists in Ethiopic and Latin, we have an abbreviated form of a so-called "Gospel of Thomas" originally Gnostic, as we know it now merely a fantastical history of the childhood of Jesus, without any notably heretical colouring.

There exists a population of Christians along the Malabar Coast who were supposedly originally converted by Thomas, and their tradition holds that he built seven churches, was martyred by spearing on the "Big Hill" near Madras, and was buried in Mylapore.
Thomas was probably born in Galilee to a humble family, but there is no indication that he was a fisherman, He was a Jew, but there is no account of how he became an apostle to Christ.
There are several other apocryphal works concerning or attributed to Saint Thomas including The Gospel of Thomas and Consummation of Thomas the Apostle.

Thomas Aquinas justified the execution of criminals in noting that the fear of death often facilitated their conversion.
After this delay, the inquisitors would publish the edict of the faith which ordered all Christians, under penalty of excommunication, to denounce the heretics and those who protected them.

"Thomas" seems not to be a personal name, but rather an epithet meaning "twin." There is a tradition that he was the twin of Jesus, at least in appearance.

Murphy came to St. Thomas in 1954 on the recommendation of Shannon, who later said, “I want to have it carved on my tombstone that I helped bring Terry Murphy to St. Thomas.” While teaching religion and living with students in Ireland Hall, Murphy began graduate studies in political science.
