Seeking islands on which to cultivate sugar as well as an outlet for trade, the Danish West India and Guinea Company (a group of nobles and merchants chartered by the Crown) took possession of St. Thomas in 1672 and its neighbor St. John in 1717.
Until Denmark outlawed its slave race in 1803, Christiansted was an important port on the infamous Triangular Trade, which took trinkets and rum from Europe to Africa, slaves to the Caribbean, and sugar and molasses to New England or Europe.
Among his accomplishments were a plan for a new town, which he named Christiansted in honor of the reigning monarch, King Christian VI, and a survey of the island into plantations of 150 acres, which were offered at bargain prices to new settlers.

CHRISTIANSTED, U.S. Virgin Islands -- Home aquarium owners, most in the United States, are threatening fragile reefs by buying up tons of the world's coral and tropical fish, experts say.
The U.S. Coral Reef Task Force is meeting on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix to consider ways to preserve reefs and mull reports by its committees of scientists, business leaders and government officials.
The demand to fill fish tanks is fueling a thriving trade in illegal harvesting, with divers squirting cyanide into reefs to stun fish and killing smaller fish and coral in the process.
