Fort Christina was the first Swedish settlement in North America and the principal settlement of the New Sweden colony.
Built in 1638 and named after Queen Christina of Sweden, it was located approximately 1 mi (1.6 km) east of downtown Wilmington, Delaware, at the confluence of the Brandywine Creek and the Christina River, approximately 2 mi (3 km) upstream from the mouth of the Christina on the Delaware River.
Minuit selected the site on the Christina River near the Delaware as being optimal for trade in beaver pelts with the local Lenape.

After Minuit was dismissed by the directors of the West India Company from his post as director-general of New Netherland, he was quickly lured by the Swedes for their New World venture.
It was at the point where the smaller river, which the Swedes named the Christina River, flowed into the South River, and thus the natural spot to which Indians bearing furs from the interior would arrive in their canoes.

The Dutch had established one or two Delaware River settlements but by the late 1620s had moved most of their inhabitants to Manhattan which became the center of New Netherland.
A fort was built near present-day Wilmington, Delaware at the mouth of the Christina River (named for Sweden's Queen Christina).
Most of the Swedish population was on the west side of the Delaware, but after the New Netherland's Fort Nassau was re-established to challenge the Swedes, Ft. Elfsborg was established near present-day Salem, New Jersey.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Nov. 7 presented a $1 million grant to the Christina River Basin Clean Water Partnership to support efforts to preserve and protect the Christina watershed that covers 565 square miles in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
The Christina watershed group plans to use the funding to further restore and protect the river by implementing agricultural and stormwater best-management efforts in targeted areas of the river.
The Christina Partnership is one of 20 community-based groups receiving federal funding under the new $15 million national watershed initiative announced last year.
