From 1460 the Gottorp estate came to King Christian I who mortgaged it to Queen Dorothea (129) from whom it went to her son the later King Frederik I (129-5) in 1490.
The area of southern Jutland to the Elb was 1544 divided into the two duchies Schleswig and Holstein, and Duke Adolf got the estate of Gottorp and from then his house called themselves Dukes of Holstein-Gottorp.
