Lydia went south from Christmas Island into deep pelagic waters, then out about 500 km to the northwest, back to the east and through the Sunda Strait (between Java and Sumatra), where she lingered off the Sumatran islands of Bangia and Bilitang for a few days.

Watched on and off for two hours in the evening with Thomas Heinicke, initial identification was made as Lesser Frigatebird Fregata ariel, a species recorded several times previously in South Korea.
Subsequent study of the images seemed to reveal several features that were perhaps also shown by Christmas Island Frigatebird Fregata andrewsi, and a request for identification was made.

It was impossible to assess population levels of each species within the groups but slightly less than half the birds seen were Christmas Island Frigatebirds (Fregata andrewsi).
Many were fl with a small patch of white on the sides of the body near the axilla (males) or with white on the breast and upper belly, the lower belly and vent being fl (females).
