Although some tropical islands produce large-format Christmas stamps primarily intended for sale to stamp collectors, for the rest of the world, Christmas stamps are "working stamps" that will be used in large numbers to send greeting cards and postcards.
During the 1990s, stamps for Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Eid, and Chinese New Year have become a regular part of the holiday program, although the designs tend be used for several years, distinguishable only by a different denomination or year date.

In the book "75 Years of Christmas Stamps" by Waller Sager and Kathleen Berry, a reference is made to a William Wylie article in Scott's Monthly Journal of Dec. 1971.
The curiosity of this issue was that this was the first stamp on the world which depicted expressly Christmas scene." This has led me to the conclusion that Hungary's 1943 set is the world's first Christmas stamp.

Christmas, Michigan, population about 400, was given its name by a Munising man who started a roadside factory to make holiday gift items in 1938.
The factory is long gone, but the the community of Christmas continued to grow, becoming a popular resort area and a joy for snowmobilers.
