Topic: Christofer Johnsson

Therion (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Johnsson was frustrated at the lack of live shows the band was given, because without live shows, the fans would not see the band, and sales would not increase.
Johnsson also had a problem with the music, Wawrzeniuk was busy with his studies and couldn't go on tour so Johnsson got a friend of his, Tommy Eriksson best known for the musical project Shadowseed, to fill in on drums.
Johnsson had already written two of the songs earlier and they were not intended for the project, but for a project with the Skyclad singer that never happened.

Christofer: We are all about classical mythical topics like the Kabala, Enochian magic, old magic tradition, and a lot of the classic topics as well as a lot of new topics [that affect the way man is today].
Christofer: Usually, the lyrics are written after the music and we just have to get in the meditation state of mind and try to catch the atmosphere of the song.
Christofer: I think it was when we got the sales account for the Theli album because I was so convinced it was a big flop.

These riffs, though, are really quite good: Christofer Johnsson has always had a great sense of arrangement and all of his compositions flow very well...regardless of the sub-genre they are presented in.
Since vocals have never quite been a settled issue in the Therion camp (just as long as guitarist/composer Christofer Johnsson sticks to playing and not singing), their symphonic compositions are probably the most enjoyable thing they do.
Johnsson has raised the ante a bit on Secrets of the Runes by utilizing live classical instrumentation and a full-on chorus, but when the material and songwriting is excruciatingly bland, all the talented musicians in the world won't be able to save it.

Get Ready to ROCK! Interview with Christofer Jonsson of metal rock band Therion
Christofer: The thing is that before tonight’s show, we have only played in London once before which was in 1998, together with two more bands which were Anathema and Moonspell, and it was not a headline show back then.
Christofer: The problem is that in most places that we toured so far the venues were so small, that you can hardly see the choir on stage.
Christofer: We will manage to find a way of squashing everybody (laughs). We do not have enough space to put the choir on a special stand or something, so they will have to stand on the back next to the drum kit...

I personally think Christofer sounded a little bit better back in the early 90s but he is doing the growling vocals surprisingly well on this album as well, especially when realizing that he has not been doing this for many years now.
Christofer is responsible for penning the words and, in accordance with the title, the stories told are based on the biblical figures, part history, part fantasy.
As Christofer is not responsible for much of the music on this album it has little in common with the heavy metal influenced death metal of early Therion.

Therion mastermind Christofer Johnsson has spent the second half of his ten year career thus far merging the worlds of metal and classical in an uncompromising fashion that's taken the band far from other genres that propose the idea (such as power metal or prog or the slapdash duct-tapings of Yngwie and Metallica).
Deggial is the man's boldest move yet, Johnsson assembling a team of 27 musicians to pull it off, this time including brass and woodwinds in the mix, along with his signature strings and operatics.
Also new is the '80s metal accessibility of the riffs, Johnsson going for a clean-burning throwback to his core faves (Accept, Scorpions, Maiden), for mid-metal grooves and wide-open spaces.

Christoffer Johnsson has worked many years in the shadow of the big names, and have recieved little or no response in his native country.
Johnsson should decide on one direction for his music - I know he would do a great job either way he chooses - but as it is now it doesn't lead nowhere.

Demonoid is a project that features Therion members Christofer Johnsson (guitars/keyboards), Kristian Niemann (lead guitar) and Johan Niemann (bass); and former Soilwork/current Chimaira drummer Rickard Evensand.
The twin guitars of Johnsson and Niemann sing like Swedes’ should, and Evensand is great on the kit, keeping his playing raw and quick (“All drums are acoustic, no fucking samples or triggers were used!” screams the liner notes).
Johnsson’s deep death vocals are great on “Witchburners,” and recall Therions’ first two releases.

Their fifth album called "Theli" was very different from their first ones - Christofer finally had the budget to do the kind of album he had been dreaming of doing for years but didn't have the possibility to record it until now.
On these later albums Christofer has hired world class session musicians to play all kinds of orchestral instruments - violin, fluite, cello and so on - as well as female and male choirs to do the opera-like vocals.

With all sorts of hugely symphonic and choir-blessed folk/prog passages, and plainly chugging metal bits (loaded up with those same classical elements), Sirius B/Lemuria holds one's attention throughout, the listener marveling in the background at the expense and effort it must've taken to pull this off.
Another nice touch is the multi-dimensional male vocal presentation between lead Therian Christofer Johnsson (a bit o' death!), Mats Leven (rough, distinct, thespian), and Piotr Wawrzeniuk (hilariously, intriguingly old school Swedish, like 800 AD old school).
With all this, surprises routinely pop up, armchair quarterbacking the choices made by Christofer becoming a productive and entertaining game as we move from one lost world to another progressively, timelessly, in metal, in a community of musical voices across decades and disciplines, border-crossings and slippages through reality into fantasy.
