Christoph Willibald Gluck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gluck was born in Erasbach, Upper Palatinate, Bavaria, Germany to a forester in the service of a nobleman.
Gluck's idea was to make the drama of the work more important than the star singers who performed it, and to do away with recitative which broke up the action.
Gluck is buried in the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna, Austria.

 washingtonpost.com: An Opera Appetizer
GLUCK: "ORFEO ED EURIDICE." One of those works of art that are so beautiful they hurt, "Orfeo ed Euridice" is music of great sorrow and great joy and, finally, of such noble serenity that it seems to emanate from an otherworldly plateau where joy and sorrow have ceased to matter.
In 1774 the composer revised it as a French opera with a tenor protagonist.
Hector Berlioz's "Les Troyens" (1858) is a gigantic, extraordinarily rich hybrid of fervent romanticism and high classicism that has all the passion of the one and all the elevation and composure of the other.

 Floridian: Classical Files
Unlike Mozart, who embraced the bel canto peculiar to the Italian opera of his day, Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1767) disparaged what he viewed as its excesses in favor of the more austere, even ethereal, dimensions of the French style.
Gluck was an outspoken reformer of operatic conventions, introducing flexibility that increased participation of instrumental ensembles and choruses.
Juxtaposing arias from Gluck's Iphegenie en Tauride, and two earlier works, Orphee et Eurydice (1762) and Paride ed Elena, together with selections from Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and La clemenza di Tito, thus offers a musical history lesson.

"At the time in which Gluck wrote Orfeo for Vienna, a wind instrument was in use that even today is employed in some churches in Germany to accompany the chorales, and is called the cornetto.
It is made of wood, has a conical bore and is played with a mouthpiece of brass or horn similar to that of a trumpet.

Orpheus, Euridice, and the Underworld, From Here
But it is the story of Eurydice’s rescue that has been irresistible to composers-—Christoff Willibald Gluck preeminent among them.
For we suppose ourselves indulgent spectators on the naïve inventions of the pagan ancients, which only incidentally supply the underpinning of Gluck’s transporting music.
But there are many ways in which Orpheus’ experience is our own, daily, whether it be underground, in the suffocating heat, the limitations and deprivations of the metropolitan underground, or in the more ephemeral promptings of intuition, the subconscious, and our dreams.
