  intro
Christopher Anstey [1724 - 1805] made a specialty out of poking fun at Bath and its foibles.
Another feature of interest for the modern reader is that Anstey moved in, and wrote about, polite Bath society in a slightly earlier, but nevertheless recognizably similar, condition than what we encounter in the novels of Jane Austin.
In the course of this Introduction, Anstey’s relations with Bampfylde the artist are discussed.

Anstey was born at Brinkley on October 31, 1724, where his father was rector.
During his residence at Bath, Anstey, like many other wealthy residents, contributed to the city’s charities with a “charitable benevolence that was part of Bath’s self-image.” He wrote many poems occasioned by the declining state of funds of the General Hospital at Bath in order to persuade the rich to donate money to the institution.
Anstey’s satirical examination of gambling and charity provides, for both hobbyists as well as serious students, a historical framework in which to place political, social, and economic issues essential for understanding eighteenth-century Bath.

Anstey's introduction to the poem details the purpose for the poem: "The following stanzas were written with a view of putting many humane but incautious people upon their guard against frequent artifices of very unworthy petitioners for pecuniary assistance" (1).
Although the poem's success was minimal (Anstey published it anonymously towards the end of his life), it is a perfect example of the light-hearted satire that made Anstey famous.
Hailed by critics and loved by the public, Anstey's most successful piece is a humorous critique “of the customs of Bath and of the amusements and activities of those who resort there for the purposes of health, fashion or society” (15).

Lives of the English Poets eBook
An account of Christopher Anstey, written by his second son, is prefixed to the handsome edition of his works, printed at London, in 1808.
He was born on the thirty-first of October, 1724, and was the son of Doctor Anstey, rector of Brinkley, in Cambridgeshire, a living in the gift of St. John’s College, Cambridge; of which the Doctor had formerly been fellow and tutor.
But Anstey, who was the senior Bachelor of the year, and to whose lot it therefore fell first to deliver this obnoxious declamation, contrived to frame it in such a manner, as to cast a ridicule on the whole proceeding.

Following on in style from his first and most famous portait of eighteenth-century Bath society, The New Bath Guide, Christopher Anstey composed An Election Ball, a humerous and affectionate satire on contemporary taste and manners, when the extravagant macaroni fashion for men was only exceeded by the outrageous head-dresses of the ladies.
Anstey's satire, written in the form of poetical letters, was enhanced by the delightful illustrations of his friend, Coplestone Warre Bampfylde.
Anstey's work has lost none of the sportive humour and gaiety that first diverted eighteenth century readers, and he remains entertaining to this day.

It was written by a country squire from Cambridgeshire called Christopher Anstey, and it became an immediate best seller.
The book was not a guide in the accepted sense of the word; it was a satirical review, in verse, of fashionable society in Bath in the mid eighteenth century, and its broad humour found a receptive audience in London and Bath, where it was widely read and discussed.
