On the death of Sir Patricus Curwen, in 1669, without male issue, the baronetcy lapsed; he was succeeded by his brother Henry, at whose death, being childless, the manor and estates, by virtue of the settlement, reverted to another branch of the family, the children of Darcy Curwen, of Sella Park.
Curwen shewed the evils which this heavy duty caused to stock farmers, and the value of salt in rendering coarse food nourishing and preserving cattle from disease.
Curwen was formerly lieutenant in the 56th regiment; he is a J.P. and D.L. for Cumberland, and patron of four livings.

Victorians were fascinated with ancient civilizations and stories in which magic and superstition seemed to replace the (then) modern technology; many believed that man had already reached the pinnacle of creation, and longed for a much simpler time in which to live.
Andrew Lang's "The Romance of the First Radical" (1886) and Henry Curwen's Zit and Xoe (1887) were two of the first stories set in a romanticized Stone Age, where stone-axe wielding heroes cut their way through a series of picaresque adventures.
In The Story of the Glittering Plain (1891), Morris established several of the hallmarks of heroic fantasy by creating a quasi-medieval setting for his tale and devising a simple, believable framework for magic to work.

This would lead to his being in the hands of Swedish authorities if investigations of Iran-Contra, now underway, ever revealed his role in the Stockholm assassination.
Hayward's brother Christopher, who had purchased the drug-running catamaran True Love from Kevin Taylor, was apparently forced to join the plot under threat from DOOK that he would kill his Army agent brother if he didn't cooperate.
As for who DOOK is, he sounds like Padraic Wilson, long-time leader of the PIRA, and its commanding officer in the high security Maze Prison until his release in 1999.

The book then takes the reader through the succeeding list of "C" incumbents such as Hugh Sinclair, Stewart Menzies, John Sinclair, Dick White, John Rennie, Maurice Oldfield, Dickie Franks, Colin Figures, Christopher Curwen, Colin McColl, David Spedding, Richard Dearlove and John Scarlet.
Of especial interest however are the last two on this list because these are the men who facilitated the move to an unprovoked war with Iraq, as the text will demonstrate.

The issue of ‘cover’ is critical to many intelligence operations and careers, and Bennett’s slip over Gouzenko and Machon might suggest he does not completely understand the concept of intelligence professionals adopting journalistic, commercial or diplomatic covers to assist their missions overseas.
It is indeed odd, when describing the SIS careers of Dickie Franks and Christopher Curwen he fails to realize that their ostensible foreign service postings were merely cover for their SIS assignments.
