Christopher Darden, Biography, O.J. Simpson Trial   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-01)
The fact that Darden was an African-American was significant because the Simpson jury was comprised mostly of African-Americans, Cochran had joined the defense team, and the victims were white.
In bringing Darden on, the prosecution hoped to dispel the view that this matter was a racist "white against fl" prosecution.
Darden delivered half of the prosecutions closing statement, arguing that with each domestic abuse incident, "the fuse was burning" and finally resulted in Simpson murdering his ex-wife, Brown-Simpson, and Goldman as a result.

Darden came to the public's attention as a member of the O. prosecution team; his previous efforts, including The Trials of Nikki Hill (1999), were critical and commercial successes.
Darden brings the same insider's savvy this time, and coauthor Lochte the same muscular prose, but the plot is founded on third-rate paranoia, and the coincidences that move it toward an unlikely conclusion are barely worthy of a straight-to-video movie.
Darden and Lochte have done much better and probably will again in the future, but on balance, this is a disappointing effort.

Christopher Darden: The main thing is that you have a good editor - one that believes in you and who will give you the feedback that you need to produce a good book.
Christopher Darden: Some of these issues were discussed in "In Contempt." One of the things I learned about in "In Contempt" is that one should be careful about discussing one's personal life publicly.

DARDEN: As you know, I was about to stick a butcher knife in his hand and see if he could hold it, but then I thought better of it.

Christopher Darden was brought in to give the O.J. Simpson prosecution team extra strength and a racial balance.
Not surprisingly, this solid collaboration between ex-prosecutor Darden (In Contempt) and mystery novelist Lochte (Neon Smile, etc.) is about a high-profile murder case as seen by the Los Angeles D.A.'s office?but it's not about that high-profile murder case.
The ending strains credulity, but for the most part Darden and Lochte lead a stimulating investigation into the intersections, and racial tensions, among the dispossessed, the wealthy and a legal system that purports to dispense justice to both in equal measure.

African Americans Should Not Prosecute Crimes
According to Darden, at least some members of the African American community view him as a "sell- out"--one who allowed himself to be used to further white interests for personal gain at the expense of the broader African American community.
Christopher Darden has come to epitomize the burdens that African American prosecutors face as they perform their professional tasks.
The "Darden Dilemma," Russell suggests, is better viewed as "an ongoing interplay of competing values within Black attorneys who are attempting to puzzle through the implications of their professional choices for the well-being of Black communities." Black prosecutors make these professional choices, Russell rightly points out, in a world that is not of their making.
