In 1878 Thomas and Christopher Furness commenced shipowning, in 1883 Christopher Furness purchased an interest in the shipyard of Edward Withy and in 1884 bought the company outright.
In 1885 Christopher Furness collaborated with Thomas Wilson to form the Wilson-Furness Line to operate services between Newcastle and New York.
Furness, Withy & Co was sold to C. Tung, Hong Kong in 1980 but the new owners gradually disposed of the ships and in 1990, the Tung group sold Furness, Withy (Shipping) Ltd to Rudolf A. Oetker who controlled Hamburg South America Line.

Furness, Withy and Co. had been founded in West Hartlepool in September 1891 by Christopher Furness, later Lord Furness of Grantley, and Henry Withy.
When Christopher Furness died in 1912 he was succeeded by his nephew Sir Stephen Furness MP who sadly died two years later while on holiday.
Under the Furness, Withy umbrella the livery of the Prince Line ships was altered to reflect the change of ownership and Sir James remained a director until the company's operations were moved to 12, Leadenhall Street, London when the Furness family sold their shipping interests in 1919.

Coincidentally the ‘Furness Hartlepool’ berthed at this very site on her first visit to Hartlepool in April.
To commemorate the historical relationship between Furness Withy and Hartlepool docks and to mark the first voyage of the ‘Furness Hartlepool’ to its named port, the Company hosted a welcoming reception for local guests on board the vessel on 2 April 2007.

 Local Heritage Initiative - Furness School Nature Area & Heritage Project
Furness School was originally an orphanage known as Swanley Home for Little Boys.
In the early 20th century, Sir Christopher Furness, a shipping magnate became involved with the school and residential boys received an education in seamanship and nautical skills, being sent to the Navy once they had completed their schooling.
To celebrate the completion, local schools will be invited to design an interpretive flag for the school to be displayed during the final exhibition.

We provide secondary education for boys with emotional, behavioural and social needs and the LHI money will provide specialist computer equipment, ensuring that all the pupils regardless of ability can take part in the project and that data is recorded successfully.
