Christopher Guest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christopher Haden-Guest, 5th Baron Haden-Guest (born February 5, 1948), is an actor, writer, director, composer, and musician known as Christopher Guest.
Guest was born in New York City, the son of English-born 4th Baron Haden-Guest, and onetime CBS-executive, Jean Pauline Hindes[1], a Jewish American.
Guest is sometimes off-putting in interviews and promotional appearances, as well as with people who have met him outside of the work environment, because contrary to expectations of him as a comedian he often seems deadpan, even dour.

Christopher Guest, the distinguished, grey-haired, stern-faced gentleman regarding me over steepled fingers in his Beverly Hills office, is best known for his portrayal of Nigel Tufnel, the gormless rock star in the classic 1984 satire This Is Spinal Tap.
When Guest was a young man in New York in the mid-1960s he played bluegrass in a band with Arlo Guthrie, son of Woody and soon to be a famous folk singer in his own right.
Guest is still in touch with Guthrie, and the folk star Loudon Wainwright III is a close friend; both of them, he says, begged him to be in the film.

indieWIRE: REVIEW | Buzz Kill: Christopher Guest's "For Your Consideration"
Breaking free of the mockumentary shackles that had become his exclusive domain, Christopher Guest gets back to mirthful basics with "For Your Consideration," which is less a La-La-Land satire than a glorious sketch comedy throwback.
Yet in the move away from the regional satire of myopic townies, Guest, Levy, and his brilliant crew of improvisers turn the camera on themselves, and what results is both a more straightforward narrative and a refreshingly anachronistic throwback to the cast's comic origins.

SPLICEDwire | "A Mighty Wind" review (2003) Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer
Writer-director Christopher Guest -- king of the mockumentary genre -- returns to his musical oddball roots in "A Mighty Wind," a "This Is Spinal Tap" for the 1960s folk-pop crowd.
It features a steady stream of Guest's hilarious non-sequiturs (references to Shetland pony polo leagues and a low-budget record label that saved money by not putting holes in the center of its LPs) that are sure to please fans of his other flippant flicks.
But the more Christopher Guest films one sees, the more they start to feel the same -- and in "A Mighty Wind," the writer-director drops most of the satirical spirit to spend the last reel or two actually presenting the climactic folk concert in its too-straightforward entirety.

Amazon.ca: Best in Show (Widescreen): DVD: Christopher Guest,Parker Posey,Michael Hitchcock,Eugene Levy,Catherine ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
One-time star and co-writer of the greatest mockumentary of all, This Is Spinal Tap (1983), actor and director Christopher Guest creates this wickedly funny and intelligent character comedy with a cast of sublimely talented improvisational performers.
Christopher Guest has a rare misstep in "Best in Show," the follow-up to comedy classic "Waiting for Guffman." While "Best" is still a fun and frenetic mockumentary, it isn't up to the standards of its sibling mockumentaries -- it's a little too repetitive and over-the-top.
I couldn't connect with Christopher Guest's hillbilly character, Eugene Levy's character lost me behind his buck teeth and two left feet (No, they really are two left feet!), and I thought Fred Willard's ringside color-man bit was more irritating than slashingly satiric.

Guest moved behind the camera, co-producing and directing the premiere of the CBS sitcom "Morton and Hayes" and helming the TV-movie remake "Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman" (HBO, 1993), starring Daryl Hannah.
Guest moved to the director's chair in 1989 with "The Big Picture" (1989), an insider's look at Hollywood wheeling and dealing filled with good performances and smartly funny jokes.

PopMatters | Film | Interviews | Christopher Guest - Best in Show
Tell people you are interviewing Christopher Guest and generally you will get a blank stare.
This is Spinal Tap has undoubtedly had far-reaching cultural influence (on say, youth cultures, rock and roll as institution, fandom, and docu-/mockumentary), just as his Waiting for Guffman skewers small-town American dreams of notoriety, and his new film, Best in Show is often a dead-on critique of American consumerism.
But Christopher Guest resists ascribing any larger influence or social significance on this or any of his films, preferring to dwell on questions of characterization, emotion, and the human condition.

Christopher Guest has spent the past few years cooking up brutal spoofs of relatively demure topics – folk singers, show dog people.
He's switching gears a bit with For Your Consideration, the upcoming project that he'll direct from a script he's co-writing with Eugene Levy.
Not a mockumentary but a film-within-the-film film, Consideration will follow three actors working on "an extraordinarily poorly written" movie called Home For Purim, and watches as their lives are shaken up by awards season.
