Christopher Mayhew - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mayhew was elected to Parliament from the constituency of Norfolk South in 1945.
Mayhew's defection to the Liberals was to serve as the forewarning of the split within the Labour Party that would occur in 1981 with the rise of the SDP.
Mayhew's defection was the first sign of the large rift growing between the Left and Right in the Labour Party and began the process by which the Liberal party and its political heirs, the SDP-Liberal Alliance and the Liberal Democrats became a major force in British politics.

 CHRISTOPHER HUSSEY (February 18, 1598/99 - March 6, 1667/68)
Christopher Hussey, "second child" of John Hussey and Mary Wood Hussey, was born in Dorking, Surrey in 1599, according to "One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families." He was baptized in Dorking February 18, 1599, according to Dorking parish register.
Christopher Hussey was recorded as the head of a party which arrived after 88 days at sea on the "William and Francis" June 5, 1632 at Saugus, [later Lynn] Massachusetts by Gov. John Winthrop in "Winthrop's Journal." "Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy" states [erroneously] that he was a resident of Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1630.
Christopher Hussey became a proprietor on Nantucket Island 7th, 2nd 1659, according to "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire." On 10th, 5th 1660 he was one of the men who bought half the land and grazing rights on the island from the Sachems--Wanamamack and Nickanoose--for 10 pounds.

Publish it not: the Middle East Cover-Up by Tim Llewellyn February 2006
When Adams and Mayhew wrote this book, in 1974 and 1975, they were in a hopeful mood, despite the litany of pressures, lies and dirty tricks they were recording and despite the almost unrestrained success with which Israel was going from strength to strength.
When Adams and Mayhew wrote there was at least the space for a Palestinian state and hints of even-handedness in the international community; the Palestinian movement was taking its place as a political force in the region; international reporting was improving; politicians were waking up to the facts; Arab states seemed to be mobilizing.
Michael Adams and Christopher Mayhew would be both amused and depressed to see how the Israeli lobby recycles old myths, canards about Palestinians and Arabs and explanations of the very creation of Israel that were refuted many years ago.

 Christopher Hussey
Christopher Hussey was one of the original settlers of Newbury and Hampton.
Christopher Hussey incurred the displeasure of the General Court by petitioning with others, for a mitigation of the sentence of Robert Pike "for seeming to uphold speaking in public without a license." Christopher Hussey and John Bishop had been previously punished for taking sides with Robert Pike who "espoused the cause of Macy and Peasley."
Christopher was admitted freeman in 1634 having journeyed to America aboard the William and Francis which arrived 5 Jun 1632.

 Cold War feature
The original idea was the brain-child of Christopher Mayhew, Foreign Office Junior Minister in 1947.
"Mayhew put forward his ideas: the campaign should be as positive as possible laying stress on the merits of social democracy but, he pointed out, "we shouldn't appear as defenders of the status quo but should attack capitalism and imperialism along with Russian communism."
In an interview with Lyn Smith, sometime in the 1970s, Mayhew defended the need for secrecy as follows: "There was a large Labour majority in the House of Commons and quite a number of "fellow travellers" and people with Stalinist views inside the Labour Party.

 My Descent from Christopher Hussey
Christopher and his family early removed to Newbury where, in 1636, he was chosen as one of the "seven men," as they were first called, then "townsmen," then "townsmen select," and finally "selectmen."
He was one of the deacons of the church in 1640 and held several town offices as moderator, town clerk, selectman, and many times representative to the General Court.
Christopher never lived in Nantucket but deeded all his lands and rights there to his sons, Stephen and John, although Stephen was the only one to actually make his home there.

In 1975 Christopher Mayhew and Michael Adams delivered their powerful indictment of Western media coverage of the Israel-Palestine issue.
Both men, politician and journalist, had direct experience of the situation in Palestine and both felt passionately that a curtain of concealment and deceit had been drawn over media discussion of the Israeli colonization of Palestine, resulting in misinformed and biased perceptions.

Big Brother with a High Moral Sense - George Orwell: The Chestnut Tree Cafe
In 1948, an innocuous-sounding Information Research Department was set up within the Foreign Office by Christopher Mayhew, then a junior minister, now the 83-year-old Lord Mayhew.
Its purpose - to counter Communist propaganda - was hidden even from sections of the Labour government to which he belonged: as Attlee told Mayhew, "I don't think Nye Bevan needs to be troubled".
The IRD employed Celia Kirwan, a close friend of Orwell's to whom he had once proposed marriage and whose twin sister was married to Arthur Koestler, author of that other famous disquisition on Stalinism, Darkness at Noon.

Some Labor M.P.s were bothered by the fact that, like Wilson, he seems impossible to pin down ideologically.
Christopher Mayhew, a former Labor M.P. who entered Parliament with Callaghan in 1945, recalled that the new M.P. was even then a leader, hustling about to corral his fellow freshmen for a meeting.
"But on the great issues of the day," recalls Mayhew, "there was no indication of where he stood."
