While not exactly the exciting life McQuarrie imagined leading, the experience was a valuable one as it allowed him to study movies and audiences' reaction to them.
Just as he was about to give up the detective agency in favor of a career with the New York City Police Department, he was approached by Singer to co-write the screenplay for "Public Access" (1993), a thriller about a small town whose secrets are revealed by the host of a local TV show.
Singer and McQuarrie reteamed for the acclaimed "The Usual Suspects", another film noir thriller with an acclaimed script filled with twists and surprises brought to life by an impeccable cast.

McQuarrie was born and raised in Princeton Junction, New Jersey, where he attended high school with director Bryan Singer and actor Ethan Hawke.
McQuarrie spent the next several years dividing his time between rewriting studio movies (such as Singer’s X-Men) and developing a screenplay on the life of Alexander the Great, written with Peter Buchman, for Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.
More recently McQuarrie has developed a script with co-writer Dylan Kussman about the life of John Wilkes Booth and "The Last Mission" with co-writer Nathan Alexander detailing the harrowing last hours of WWII in the Pacific.

INTERVIEW: McQuarrie's Way of the Writer-Director
McQuarrie presents a criminal machine that he feels is operating around us, all the time.
Christopher McQuarrie: I've always wanted to make "Alexander the Great" which is not economically the wisest first film to shoot, so I thought I should try something else first, and I knew the area in which I'd get the least amount of interference and the most amount of support was to make another crime film.
McQuarrie: With not having the same forces working against me, the first cut of the movie was certainly overwritten.

Christopher McQuarrie - Biography - Moviefone
Though McQuarrie's talent as an emerging director may have been difficult to gauge given the mixed reaction to his directorial debut, The Way of the Gun (2000), his talent for creating off-beat and believable characters could well be the saving grace that keeps his career in the fast lane.
McQuarrie returned stateside shortly thereafter, finding employment at a New Jersey detective agency in the following few years.
After that success, McQuarrie made a series of attempts to deviate from the familiar criminal element in his writing, but all met with rejection from studios.

McQuarrie almost chose a career in law enforcement, and was about to enter the police academy when he got a fateful call from his childhood friend, director Bryan Singer.
Variety called the Suspects screenplay “one of the most elaborate, tangy, and solidly satisfying original crime scripts in a long while.” As the London Times put it, most of the studios turned it down for being too complex and clever, which is exactly what the critics and the public loved about the film.
I found McQuarrie to be engaging, hilarious, and brutally candid, especially when recalling the heartbreaking experience of trying to get his dream project, Alexander the Great, off the ground.

McQuarrie creates some good action sequences (particularly the slow-moving car "chase" through the alleys), but that only serves to emphasize the one major weakness of the film: the script.
While I did enjoy the film a lot, I thought McQuarrie got a little too cutesy with the dialogue at some points, and maybe he himself realized this as there's one scene featuring one of the characters making fun of the way another talks.
Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote the screenplay of THE USUAL SUSPECTS a few years ago, THE WAY OF THE GUN is a movie not to be missed.

You would never guess from appearances that deep within the soul of good-natured screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie lies a figment as dark as that of Keyser Soze, the personification of pure evil birthed by McQuarrie in his screenplay for The Usual Suspects.
But now McQuarrie is out on his own, not only writing, but also shouldering for the first time the task of directing.
Unrepentant and unbowed, McQuarrie's criminals (led by a tough-as-nails Ryan Phillippe and The Usual Suspects' mumbling con, Benicio Del Toro) form a complicated web in which no misdeed exists in isolation.

When you see that same lethal pose in The Way of the Gun, Christopher McQuarrie's cheeky, bloody, floridly twisty kidnap thriller, it's still amusing, but it's now about as novel as hearing the recitation of Miranda rights on a TV crime show.
He puts the baby faced Phillippe in a scruffy beard and turns him into a junior Christopher Walken psycho, and he has Diggs deliberately dial down his charm to a steely stealth cool.
McQuarrie keeps his heroes at ironic arm's length, and he's too enamored of high body count action dazzle: Does the final showdown at a ''Wild Bunch'' style brothel really have to go on for 20 minutes?

Way of the Gun Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
From a musical score that evokes the 'spaghetti Westerns' of the Seventies, the unspoken code of conduct that govern the behavior of its anti-heroes, and the wild shoot-outs in desert locales, this is cowboy movie of the "Pulp Fiction" generation.
Though McQuarrie tries to infuse some quirks and the odd moment of humanity into his characters, particularly with respect to the two protagonists, few of them are actually memorable, let alone likable, and it is sometimes unclear who the audience should be rooting for.
Unfortunately, in an environment flooded with Tarantino-esque crime-dramas, the narrative twists, brutal violence, and quirky goings-on found in "Way of the Gun" are hardly groundbreaking, especially in light of the script's lack of attention to character and dialogue.

This commentary has long been celebrated as one of the best ever recorded — owing largely to the fact that McQuarrie and Singer (friends since high school) are secure enough in their talents to make fun of themselves and their work.
