Guardian Unlimited Books | News | The case of Sir Christopher Meyer
The recent calls for Sir Christopher Meyer to resign as chairman of the Press Complaints Commission have usually carried the implication that a man who is so good at invading the privacy of others has no right to lead an institution whose functions include judging the rights and wrongs of such invasions, real or alleged.
A clearer case for Meyer's resignation can be found in the Press Complaints Commission's website, which states that the PCC chairman "must not be engaged in or, otherwise than by his office as Chairman, connected with or interested in the business of publishing newspapers, periodicals or magazines".
Meyer became chair of the PCC in 2003, the year he left Washington, though the PCC website, so commendable in many ways, is untransparent about the process.

LONDON — When Christopher Meyer, former British ambassador to Washington, entered the House of Commons committee room last week, all eyes were on his feet.
Meyer, 61, who served in Washington from 1997 to 2003 before retiring, violated what British officials call "good chap" practice in his memoirs.
Though some lawmakers called for Meyer to be "de-gonged" — stripped of his knighthood — he said DC Confidential served the public interest and was far less candid than American books about the same period, such as Bob Woodward's Plan of Attack, the inside-Washington story on the run-up to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

The lionisation of Meyer by some on the anti-war side is curious because if you read the book you will see that Meyer is pro-war: he supported some kind of invasion of Iraq, still defends aspects of the invasion now, and played a not insignificant role in making sure it happened.

Indeed, so radical is the redefinition of categories that Davis and Meyer open their new book, BLUR: The Speed of Change in the Connected Economy (Addison-Wesley, 1998), with an unusual caveat: "This is not a 'book.'" Davis and Meyer understand the circular logic of free agency: "Connectivity enables you to seize more independence while independence motivates you to get ever more connected." There's a corollary: Knowledge is value - but only if you share it.
