Christopher Paul Curtis has felt a burning desire to write ever since he couldn't talk his way out of problems.
It was she who told Curtis that he "better hurry up and start doing something constructive with his life or else start looking for a new place to live." And with those loving words of inspiration, a writing career was launched.
Curtis is a Flint native and a graduate of the University of Michigan-Flint.

Just a few days before his visit to Powell's, Christopher Paul Curtis learned that his second book, Bud, Not Buddy, had been awarded both the Newbery Medal, the most prestigious award in children's literature, and the Coretta Scott King Medal, given each year to a fl writer for an inspirational and educational contribution to literature.
Curtis: I was always a very good reader and a good writer, but when I was in school there was a different emphasis placed on writing.
Curtis: I hadn't read any young adult or children's literature until I found out I was a young adult or children's author, then I said, "I better read some of this stuff!" I found I really enjoyed some of it.

BUD, NOT BUDDY by Christopher Paul Curtis is written in the voice of Bud in his quest to find his father during the 1930’s.
Curtis explains how to central characters Lefty Lewis and Herman Calloway were both based on his grandfathers.
BUD, NOT BUDDY is a story that I think goes beyond grade levels, but I would probably suggest the reading as a class novel in middle school or in upper elementary school if it fit with a unit on the Depression.

Barbara, I have read this book aloud to my students and received a fantastic reaction for me to "Keep reading, don't stop." They absolutely love the humor and could relate easily to the sibling rivalry.
Along with it's humor, the book does highlight the issue of racism during the 1600's which sparks an interesting discussion group with 10 - 11 year olds.
