With tireless energy and enterprise, Christopher Polhem was active as both an entrepreneur and inventor in a country which, during his lifetime, went from being a major military power to a nation of scientific enquiry.
Polhem’s parents were Christina Eriksdotter Schening from Vadstena and Wulf Christopher Polhammar, a German merchant who had emigrated to Visby where Polhem was born in 1661.

Polhem was a man of real genius, famous for his prolific contributions to many different fields, including horology, the mechanics of machines, mining engineering and the organisation of production2.

King Charles XII appointed the young man as an assistant to the brilliant, acerbic engineer Christopher Polhem, and Swedenborg spent the next five years publishing treatises on various scientific subjects.
Swedenborg's relationship with Polhem was apparently more than just professional, seeing as Polhem approved of him sufficiently to allow him to court, and become engaged to, his daughter (this relationship seems to have ended when Swedenborg discovered that she was in love with another man).
After the Polhem interlude, Swedenborg continued studying and travelling, eventually taking up a paid position as an assessor for the Swedish Board of Mines (1924 on).
